iPhone app version?

orbmanBYEOS

Question

I've been using BackyardEOS (premium license) for a couple of years now for DSO, cometary, and planetary photography, and really like it. I use it with My Canon 7DII camera body and various lenses (10mm-800mm camera, MAK102mm, and a loaner C-8). My camera and MAK optics are mounted on a StarAdventurer tracker. From my patio, I can polar align the tracker, and use BackyardEOS to focus the optics, PUSH-TO (with zoom lens) my DSO target, and then take sample images before using a capture plan for multiple captures. My laptop is on a small table and connected to my camera via cable, and I need to sit on a chair to operate the laptop.

I have two limitations. The first is that my house blocks the view to the south up to about 45 degrees elevation, and for higher targets I have to contend with thermals radiating from my house. If I want to image targets to the south, it is better if I take my equipment to another location. In a couple of years, we plan on moving to a senior living facility, and I will have to travel to imaging sites, as well as having to haul my equipment a good distance to my car.

In both of these scenarios, I do not want to have to carry my laptop, table, and chair along with all of the rest of my equipment (the C-8 loaner gets returned when we move).

The Canon 7DII has a slot for a Wi-Fi card that I can use. So my question is if there is a version of BackyardEOS that I can use from my iPhone? Or other suggestions?

Thank you.

Of course the direction that the O'Telescope developers take is up to them, but they have previously stated that BackyardEOS is a Windows-only product and they have no plans to create a new version of it for other brands of cameras besides Canon and Nikon. Neither do they have plans to move BYE or BYN to a new platform, such as Linux, macOS, iOS, Android, etc.

Some of the newer cameras have built-in WiFi capability, but BYE uses the Canon SDK software  library to support 3rd party applications to control EOS cameras. This SDK does not have the capability to control the pairing process to allow BYE to wirelessly control any Canon camera.  Owners of those cameras have to disable WiFi in the camera's configuration menus and cable the camera to the PC with a good quality USB cable in order for BYE to connect with the camera.

Probably not the answers that you were looking for.

The high-end alternative is to place a small PC (a NUC or a dedicated Astro-PC) at the mount and then control it remotely via that device's WiFi or Ethernet.  A common mid-range alternative is to place a battery/12V powered USB Hub at the mount that is connected to your PC via a extension cable (either an Active USB Extender an ethernet-based unit) that can give you an additional 50-100ft of range.
