Second Trial Request

I downloaded a trial of BYN last year but due to other commitments, I didn't get the opportunity to use it.

Could you possibly permit another trial, now that I have more time to try it out.

I use both Nikon Z8 and an astro-modified Z6ii for astrophotography and connect to N.I.N.A. on a Mini PC via USB.

 

NINA controls the sequence and camera functions for imaging and it also has a 'Live View' (video?) feature. Canon cameras can then use a PlugIn (LensAF) so that NINA can undertake autofocus runs (e.g. Hocus Focus PlugIn).

 

If I could get the Nikons to be able to access the 'Live View' feature, I could reuse the developer of LensAF to modify the PlugIN .... but they have already explained that it needs to access 'Live View'

 

Unfortunately, the Nikon cameras can't access this feature and it results in a "kNkMAID" error .... as such, I am stuck with manual focusing

 

Would BackyardNikon fix this issue?

You should know that according to the Supported Cameras table, the Z8 is only supported with the 64-bit pre-release of BYN.

Do you think that installing BYN and connecting it to your camera will somehow allow NINA to autofocus the optical train (either telescope or lens)?

Yes, BYN's Frame & Focus functionality should display LiveView images in realtime in the BYN window. Also, BYN will allow you to pick a star and give realtime updates to the size of the star. This will allow you to manually adjust focus of a telescope to minimize the size of the star. You should also be able to adjust an autofocus lens to do the same thing with a lens rather than a telescope. None of this has anything to do with NINA. Also, BYN does not do automatic focusing with either a lens or a telescope.

If BYN is connected to the camera, NINA cannot be connected to the camera. Only one app at a time is allowed.

Finally, BYN's video functionality comes from assembling individual LiveView frames into an AVI file. It does not use whatever HD video capabilities the camera may have.
