Planetary FPS

orbmanBYEOS

Question

I am using BackyardEOS with my Canon 7D mark II camera body to capture planetary videos in 5x LiveView mode, and am saving only JPEGs to save laptop hard drive space. In recent sessions, BackyardEOS is reporting about 25 frames per second being captured.

My understanding is that the LiveView refresh rate is 30 fps, but I see in the 7DII manual that some of the HD modes can capture 60 fps.

Is there a way for BYE to utilize this feature to capture more than 25 fps, or perhaps benefit from the 7DII being set in one of its 60 fps modes?

Alternately, as the BYE JPEGs are compressed frames, would it be better just to save 60 fps MP4 images on my camera's memory card?

No, and you don't want to. HD mode is misleading and is not really high definition. The absolute best resolution you can get is via live view at 5x, this gives you a 1-to-1 pixel resolution, meaning 1 pixel on the sensor will give you 1 pixel in the image without any interpolation. Use 5x live view supported by BYE and never look back.

BYE does not and cannot use the camera's HD video mode to capture planetary images. Canon does not support this in their SDK. Instead BYE uses LiveView frames as the image source for planetary shooting. The 5X zoom provides JPG images that are at the full resolution of the sensor. These frames are downloaded as fast as possible. The power of your computer and contention for USB bandwidth can slow down the frame rate. This is the best that you can do.

You can certainly try capturing 5X zoom images with BYE and capture HD video with the camera to the camera's memory card and compare the two captures.
