I am only another user of BYE, but you can test much of BYE with a setup at the kitchen table with a lens on the camera. Some features like autoguiding and focusing will test better in a live imaging environment. But there is much that you can and should do via indoor testing. ASCOM even provides simulators for testing mount and focuser control. This lets you get familiar with BYE and maximizes your ability to take of advantage of clear, dark nights for actual imaging.

If you only want to get a Trial license and go to the field with BYE there are some things that you should understand.

  • The Trial license expires 30 days after it is activated. I do not recall the owner's ever granting a 3rd Trial license to anyone. Wait until you are ready to test/use BYE, and have an internet connection, before activating the license.
  • Windows 7 and earlier are no longer supported by either Microsoft or O'Telescope.
  • The Trial license requires an internet connection at startup to validate that you are still in the 30 day window. So if you can't get an internet connection in the field, you wasted the trip.
  • The Trial license activates all the features so don't be surprised that some of the features disappear if you choose to replace it with a Classic license. Click on the "Compare Editions" link at the bottom of the page for a list of features you get with a Classic license, vs a Premium license.

I would suggest "kitchen table" testing with the Trial license. This allows you to familiarize yourself with the software and to ask questions online. Then once you have determined that the software will work for you, you can purchase a paid license, validate it, and go to the field with confidence.

I hope this helps.
