Unable to connect to Canon EOS R8

eimmegee

Question

Some time ago, I used the trial version of BackyardEOS. I was able to connect to my Canon EOS R8 camera, only after I installed the 3.5.0 x64 - RC7 version.

Now I want use the program again, so since my trial expired I purchased a full license. I configured the new license but I can't connect to my camera anymore. The messages I get are copied at end and I also uploaded my recent logfile.

Can you help me so I can use BackyardEOS, especially since I purchased BackyardEOS now.

The obvious reason could be a faulty USB cable. When the camera is plugged into the PC and powered on, does Windows report that the camera is connected? Do you see the camera listed in the Windows Device Manager?

Other reasons could be:

1) Some other software, like the Canon EOS Utility is already connected to the camera
2) WiFi is enabled in the camera - this will prevent connection via the USB cable.

The connection between my camera and windows is ok. I can see my camera in Windows and can e.g. download pictures from my camera to my PC. This also means of cource that the USB cable is ok.  I also verified that WiFi isn't enabled on my camera.

I had the Canon EOS Utility on my PC,so to make sure that this utility wasn't the problem I removed the EOS Utility from my PC, but was after that still not possible to connect. And I don't think any other software is already connected to my camera (unless Windows itself of course).

I will try the 32 bit version later today and keep you posted...

When Windows first sees the camera it presents an AutoPlay dialog with options. Below is what I see when I power on my T5i:

I either select "Take no Action" or ignore it until it goes away. If you choose one of the other options a different driver is loaded to manage the camera. This could be preventing BYE from connecting to the camera.

I was also considering that the AutoPlay (which was default set to 'Import Photos and Videos' on my PC) could be the problem. So I changed it to 'Take no action' by default and the AutoPlay is doing nothing now when I plugin my camera into my PC. But still I'm not able to connect to my camera from BackyardEOS...

I'm pretty sure WiFi is disabled. See picture in attach (which is in Dutch, but Uitschak. means Disable). And to be sure, I tried with the 2 different configuration options for WiFi on the camera, and both give the same result

I do understand your frustration.

You said that you had the Canon EOS Utility installed. Was that app able to connect to the R8? It also uses the Canon SDK, so if the EOS Utility is able to connect to the camera, then BYE should also be able to connect; as long as nothing else is automatically connected.

If the EOS Utility is not able to connect to the camera, then perhaps Canon Tech Support can help. O'Telescope cannot get any support from Canon because they do not provide any help for 3rd party developers or users of their SDK

Finally manganed to get it working!

I installed Canon EOS Utility once again and also that one was not working anymore. After doing some googling, I found an article from Microsoft on problems with connecting cameras, suggesting to remove the USB driver of the camera in the device manager. So I tried this and when connecting once again my camera and Windows automatically reinstalling the USB driver, the EOS Utility was working again. And after installing BackyardEOS 3.5.0 x64 - RC7, also this one was working now!

I guess that by doing different installions/reinstallations of both the Canon EOS utility and several different versions of BackyardEOS, somehow the USB driver got 'corrupt'
