BYNikon, D90 Camera, Planetary, Live View Issue

angelo327

Question

Question: I have BY Nikon and a Nikon D60, D90 and D610. primarily use the D90 because the D610 is so heavy.

In Planetary, Planetary Capture Plan; I can set shutter and ISO but Aperture only list Lo, - - -, HI as choices and setting the shutter to 2 seconds or anything else doesn't result in the image on screen changing.
If I move the camera dial from M (manual) to A (aperture) then BYNikon goes crazy (repeated ding sound!) and won't stop until I go turn the camera off.
What am I doing wrong? what can I try doing to get the ability to see in Live View which exposure settings to use?

I am a Canon user so I can only tell you how I see BackyardEOS behave.

With BYE, the Aperture dropdown has all the values that are supported by the lens that is attached. When connected to a telescope the aperture list is empty.

With a kit lens on the camera the Aperture dropdown contains a range of values from f/3.5 down to f/22.

in BYE, LiveView does not support Aperture Priority shooting, only Manual mode. This is because with LiveView shooting the shutter speed does not adjust the exposure duration since there is no change in the rate at which frames are taken. The Shutter value is just a brightness adjustment.

However in Imaging mode, with the camera set to Aperture Priority (Av) and the Shutter set to Av, I  can set the Shutter dropdown to AV. This should let the camera's exposure circuitry determine the shutter speed. I have never used this feature.

One limitation of BYN and your Nikon camera may be that in order to make adjustments to the shooting settings like the Shutter, Aperture, and ISO you need to pause LiveView, change the settings, and then resume LiveView. I do not know if this is the case for all models of Nikon cameras.

I would also say that when changing the Shutter value, you might not see the brightness of the LiveView image change for all shutter values. For my Canon T5i, if I lengthen the shutter longer than 2 seconds, the  LiveView image does not get any brighter.

It may help to understand what you are trying to do. For example what lens you have connected, and what your target is.

If, for example, you are trying to shoot Jupiter, I would suggest setting the ISO to a mid-range value, the aperture a couple of stops from wide open, and adjust the shutter speed until you can just start to see the equatorial bands on the surface. The image will still be very dark, but you will be able to brighten it considerably during processing.

These are cached. Go to Settings -> Advance Settings and clear the cache. Make the camera dial is in M mode. Disconnect and reconnect the camera, this should rebuild the cache.
