Histograms?

JamesT

Question

Hi All

I do not really understand how to interpret Histograms. Before I start Googling (and probably getting confused by the tech speak) is there anyone who could give a brief overview on what to aim for in a Histogram?

Many thanks!

Hello James

Guylain has been kind enough to give you further help.  Above the histogram window on the right is a box with a number.  You can cycle through them 1 gives you one line about in the center.  Two gives you 2 lines about a third of the way in from the fight and left sides.  This will help you when following the information he provided and I think there is a 3  that give 3 lines dividing the histogram box at about 25%, 50% and 75% of the box.  I use the 2  and try to put the 'humps' in the center area.

It's a representation of your image data, pixel intensity to be a bit more accurate.  The histogram is your friend.

If the HUMP is more to the left your image is less exposed... will be darker.

If the HUMP is more to the right your image is more exposed... will be brighter.

Too much to the left and your image needs longer exposure.

Too much to the right and your image need to be shorter.

Somewhere around 1/3 in from the left and you get a good exposure for astrophotograhpy.
