Won't connect to 550D on Win XP

gbartha

Question

I just installed the latest trial edition of Backyard EOS and cannot get it to connect to my 550D camera.  I get the usual pop up list of things o check - none of which seem to apply.  According to the Canon website no drivers are needed to connect the camera to my Windows XP 32bit computer.  I never installed any Canon software either.  Again according to the Canon site there is no EOS utility for WIndows XP so it cannot be running.  I have turned the camera on, there is battery.  I was able to capture video from this camera using EOS movie record on a Windows 7 64 bit machine.  I've tried power cycling the camera and restarting the software but always get the same failure to connect.

I finally got this to work.  The problem appears to be that I plugged the camera into a USB port that just had a wireless adapter in it.  It had not been removed gracefully and seems to have confused everything even when I used other ports.  I suspected this problem when the wireless adapter failed to work when I plugged it back in.  After restarting the system it worked again.  Then I used a different USB port for the camera and that finally worked.

EOS Utility will run on XP but because it is no longer supported vendors have started removing it from their site for sure.

The 550D is a very common camera and I have one too.

If BYE does not see the camera the issue is either driver related of cable related. I'm 110% sure of that.

Can windows even see the camera?  Can you browse the card content in Windows?

Oh, which Canon drivers did you select in BackyardEOS when trying the connect?  The DIGIC III and above to the right?  Or DIGIC II on the left?  You need DIGIC III or above for the 550D; the option to the right.
