Can't get the software to display anything.

Question

I just downloaded the free/demo version of Backyard EOS to my laptop and I connected my Canon EOS 60D DSLR camera to the laptop USB port and to the "A/V Digital Out" port on the camera. I have the camera on and set to "Auto."

Looking through the camera viewfinder it shows "busy" I assume because it's connected to my laptop.

When I star up the Backyard EOS program I select the Canon 210 option as my camera is older. (I've tried the newer drivers too with the same result).

The Backyard EOS dashboard displays my camera info (60D) so I know it's recognizing my camera.

From this point on, no matter what option I click on (Frame and Focus, Planetary, Start Capture, Preview, etc.) all it does is play a short note like an error tone.

I never see a live picture on my screen.

What am I doing wrong??

First, the camera should be set to Manual shooting mode, not Auto. That is why you are getting the error tone.

Second, the 60D is a DIGIC IV camera so you should select Canon, not Canon210. Canon210 is for very old DIGIC II cameras.

Third, you won't see LiveView images in Imaging mode, only in Frame & Focus or Planetary. in Imaging mode you only see an image displayed after it has been captured by the camera and downloaded to the PC. You cannot capture images in Auto shooting mode. If the 60D has a separate BULB mode, you need to set it to BULB to capture images with exposures longer than 30 seconds. This means that you will need to manually rotate the dial on the camera body between Manual mode and BULB mode depending on whether you are in Frame & Focus, where you need shorter exposures and Imaging where you typically shoot longer exposures. This is not ideal, but it is how Canon designed the camera.

Awesome! I got it to display a picture and take a short video. Still can't get it to focus, but I'm gaining on it. My camera does have a bulb mode. I turned it to bulb mode and took the video.

I need to connect the camera to the scope for more testing. I do appreciate the help!!
