DSUSB cable alternative - tested and works in BackyardNIKON

SteveRosenow

Question

I have improved upon a design that is over on CloudyNights, and I am pleased to announce that this does work in BackyardNIKON.

I may consider taking orders for this - and I find it to be much more ergonomically friendly in design, as opposed to the Shoestring Astronomy DSUSB kit - as it's all one-piece.

A test in BackyardNIKON had full functionality and BULB exposure is done via the "Serial 1" connection in the drop-down dialog.

Steve - "more info" was just my plea for advice on how can I get one too?

Let me do some more testing on it and work up a quote. It will be much cheaper than the Shoestring Astronomy DSUSB kit! :)

Wonderful Steve!!  Cheaper and more ergonomic as always a bonus.  :D  I'll do my best to be patient and eagerly wait to hear from you.

I have finished up the testing of it and I'm pleased to say it seems to be working quite well!  I'm ready to discuss taking an order for this. PM me for details.

This was a test of a one-second bulb exposure captured about a half hour ago @ ISO100 using BackyardNIKON. The subject was a tree 150 feet away, photographed with my Nikon D5100 using the custom MC-DC2/USB-RTS Serial cable cord I built. No SD card was present in the camera. The lens was a 500mm f/8 Schmidt-Cassegrain mirror lens.

After this, a ten-second bulb exposure was commenced using the same parameters, and worked without a hitch.

The most important part of this - I really enjoy building them. Not only do I enjoy building them, it gives me something to do in the time Washington State is filled with cloudy nights! :)

I'm open to building more! Bring them on!

Hi StevePlease will you PM me your details? I am keen on ordering one for my D90. RegardsAndrewSouth Africa

I need to be clear that this will only work with the 8-pin Nikon plug, for the following D-series SLRs which require the MC_DC2 plug:

D90

D5000

D5100

D7000

D7100

D5200

After you've tasked me to build yours, allow at least two weeks' time. I am a professional photog. by trade. :)

Steve, you may want to scratch the D7100 off your list, it supports bulb over USB natively, but all other models your listed are fair game :)

EDIT: Actually I think the D5200 also supports bulb over usb. I'm just waiting for someone with a D5200 to confirm.

Steve,

As a D7000 user I'm most certainly interested in your DSUSB product.  PM me the details for ordering, etc.  I know you've mentioned free shipping at one point in the thread, but I'm in Canada and would certainly pay for shipping costs.

I'll PM you as well.

Thanks...

... Bill
