No, you must have the USB cable, but you also need a second cable. The HDMI cable is for photo viewing and video playback on a television or other video display device. It does not support changing camera settings or taking pictures from the connected device.

The Nikon SDK does not support BULB over USB for the 5100, so you need a second  cable, in addition to the USB cable, to control the shutter for BULB exposures. The following link has a table of camera models that is supported by BYN. At the top of the page is a description and a link to the Shoestring Astronomy web site where you can get the cable(s) that you need to control the D5100 for BULB exposures.

Or you could put that $$$ toward a newer camera that supports taking BULB exposures over USB. Be sure that any camera model that you are considering is listed as supported on the above-linked page.
