D5500

Question

Has anyone had a chance to try a D5500 as yet?  Just traded my D5100 this weekend.  Looking forward to getting the D5500 under the stars as so far in "playing" with the high ISO's, it's pretty clean.  Granted these have be "normal" images so far but it's got me excited.

Cheers,

Dean

I knew I couldn't sit around long with clear nights.

So on the night of the 17th, I set up and mounted the camera.  Target acquisition required more outside time but the weather is warmer now :) Used a ShutterBoss to control the exposures (no different than with the D5100) but had to go "old school" and save the images in camera to the SD card.  Unfortunately, I did waste a couple hours of data with not being able to monitor the images and see that focus had shifted but I did get good data on a second target.  Let's just say I'm really excited about the potential of the D5500 versus the old D5100.

The attached is a small 1:1 crop of M57.  Some quick image details.  The images were saved as NEF's that averaged 30MB, wow.  This is an integration of 25 - 5 minute exposures taken at ISO 1600.  ( I never used ISO 1600 with the D5100 as I found it was too noisy.  I'll have to try ISO 3200 next  :D. )  Imaging scope was a VRC-6 with a field flattener and LPS filter.  Location:  Ajax, Ontario.

Cheers,

Dean

Thanks for the reply Guylain.

I guess it doesn't pay to get the latest and greatest.  I have no problem with helping out putting the camera and software through it's paces, just let me know.  It was the feel, weight, and the addition of the touch screen that swayed me to the D5500 over the D5300 when I was upgrading.  Yes I use my DSLR for astro work but it is also my main "normal" imaging tool.  I guess astrophotography will be put on hold for a while :(

I did find a comment on another application's site ( tethering on a Mac ) and they state that the SDK has been released ( March 23rd is date of post ) but it differs quite a lot from previous SDK's.

My fingers are crossed.

Cheers,

Dean
