D5000 yay/nay for BYN use?

Kokanee

Question

I'm looking to getting into astrophotography and happen to have a Nikon D5000 already as my terrestrial DSLR; is there anyone else who is using a D5000 with BYN and getting good results? I'm aware of the issue of the DSUSB cables required if you want to run a lens; I will be doing Prime Focus photography so I'll be mounting my body right to a t ring, from what I have read I'll be gtg with a single USB cable.

Any experiences with the D5000 good or bad would be appreciated.

The D5000 is a good camera, albeit you will be limited to 30 seconds in TIME mode without a serial cable.  If all you need < 30 seconds you are good to go as-is.  If you plan/need > 30 seconds you will need a serial cable to use the BULB function.

The issue is for the high end camera with 3 digits only, like the D800, D810, etc... and only when using BULB while a lens is connected.  The D5### series is not affected by this.

Hope this helps,
