Screen stretching in BYE

Rayh

Question

Hi,

I was at a dark sky site two nights ago trying to use my trial copy of BYE.  The camera (T3i) connected fine and I could hear the shutter actuating when I clicked “Frame and Focus.”  I could see no stars in the frame and I could find no way to boost the intensity of the display to show even the noise.  The screen was just black.

I quit out of BYE and went over to Nebulosity.  I could see the stars just fine and the focus was not too bad.  I finished out the night with Neb (for one hour until I was clouded out.)

I am sure the image must have been there but I could find no way to stretch the screen to make stuff visible.  Even if the image was weak I should have been able to see the dark noise.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Ray,

In live view your can use the STAR HD feature to enhance live view stream.  Gamma, Logarithm, and live Stack will probably give you what you want.

Let us know how it goes.

OK.  Thanks!  I can get frame and focus to work as you said.  (on my desk!)  However, when I try a shooting sequence the new images are either not there or there is no way to brighten them up so I can inspect them as they are taken.

Ray,

In image capture you should have a screen stretch control but it is only in the Premium edition.

OK.  That is what I have been trying.  My netbook is not very fast and the response was slowed down by competing with the download processes.  I though those sliders did not work.  They do if I give them time.

Yeah, moving those sliders does take some cpu time as the stretchering is done live, each time you release the mouse button once you change the curve.  On slower/older computer it may take a second or too because these are large images... on newer/faster computer it is almost instant.

Have you tried 3.1 RC04?  It's more efficient in downloading and reading images, it may help a bit on slower laptop.

If we're talking about the screen stretching (vs. the Star HD) I wouldn't call them "sliders" because you can move them in two dimensions. That may not be obvious <_<

Re the Star HD, May I suggest a How-To? As I've never been able to get anything but noise, presets or otherwise. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? Video tutorial(s) would be awesome!

That is a good point, the key is to be gentle... if you go too aggressive it quickly washes out the details.  Try one setting at a time.

I'll do a how-to soon.
