Nikon D5100 and pesky IR senors with DSUSB-IR1

che

Question

I just download the Beta BYN and must say it rocks over Images Plus.  However, there's that annoying issue with the Inferred senor that I really hate (I'm about ready to pick up a 2nd hand Canon!). Everything seems to be working except the Bulb function which I need if I'm going to test this bad boy in the field.  Does  BYN support Shoestring Astronomy's DSUB-IR1 set up?  That's the one thing I really dislike about my Nikon D5100.

Guylain:    I've been in contact with Shoestring Astronomy.  I've traded my DSUSB-IR1 for a standalone DSUSB mostly to give it a whirl with your software and simply use the direct cable.  I mentioned this issue to Doug at Shoestring and he's a bit perplexed on why it's not working.  He said that "...from the computer's point of view, the DSUSB-IR1 appears identical to DSUSB.  It should be working".  He also mentioned the IR1 unit works fine with BYEOS.

Any ideas?

Both BackyardEOS 3.1 RC04 and BackyardNIKON BETA 02e sends the same commands to the DSUSB unit, they use the same code.

Did your try the DSUSB CHECK application with your Nikon D5100 and the DSUSB-IR1 before returning it?

No I didn't do that, I bet that's the fix!  I'm expecting my DSUSB unit to arrive today so I won't be able to test that.  I'm opting for the direct cable connection, which IMH0, is the better option and path of least resistance.  Trying to get the IR sensor to work in the dark led to hours of frustration and wasn't very reliable when using it with Images Plus.  I can't wait to plug the cable in the camera and go take a nap when shooting light frames. Doug might be willing to give it a test with an IR unit at Shoestring, it would be nice to know if it works.

The DSUSB and DSUSB2 both work like a charm... I actually have both for testing :)

I can't wait to use it!  You have no idea how many times I changed the name of the IR unit to "Jesus Chirst!" at 2:00 AM when shooting a target about to dip below a tree.

Cheers.

I just tested DSUSB, Nikon 8-pin cable plugged directly in camera, all functions of Backyard Nikon and Images Plus working like charm!  I have reached the Zen state of astro-photography Nirvana.  Hoping for clear skies on this blessed moonless night tonight for a real road test.  All is well.

It supports the DSUSB from Shoestring (not the DSUB-IR1).

It also support this cable, made by a BackyardNIKON user.  I have no affiliation with Steve.

Hope this help,

Thanks for clearing this up Guylain.  BTW, I've been using Images Plus for number of years which has included a fair amount of Nikon frustration.  I didn't know you could directly use a cable over the IR wireless shutter control, which is a more reliable and simple solution than using the wireless interface.  Either the developer of Images Plus or Shoestring Astronomy told me the wireless cable was the only solution for the D5100....I even returned DSUSB to Shoestring and exchanged it for DSUSB-IR1 before I knew better.  I'm a bit miffed to learn a direct cable connection was available all along....can't wait to replace their software with yours.
