Lost Focus between "Frame & Focus" and "Imaging" (Nikon D500)

Question

Hi, BackyardNIKON,

This problem is really bothering. After I use the focus control (<<</<</</>/>>/>>>) in "Frame & Focus" to adjust the focus, when I get back to Imaging to start shooting. BackyardNIKON will not use the obtained focus unless I physically turned AF to 'M' on either the camera body or the lens. There are different scenarios:

  • AF set to 'M', the focus control buttons (<<</<</</>/>>/>>>) are disabled, I have to turn the focus ring to fine tune the focus. This is hard and gives instability to my payload on the mount.
  • AF set to 'A/M' or 'M/A', BackyardNIKON reported error message and cancelled the exposure. As showing in the attached the screenshot. When I went back to "Frame & Focus", the previous gained focus is gone. Looks like when I started the capture in "Imaging", the camera tried to focus again by itself but failed.

I used to be able to focus with focus control buttons (<<</<</</>/>>/>>>) in "Frame & Focus" then go back to "Imaging" to start capture without any problem. Now I need to turn AF to "A/M" or "M/A" first, using focus control buttons (<<</<</</>/>>/>>>) to get focus, then set the camera/lens' AF to 'M', and I could shoot normally in "Imaging".

Please help!

Well, this is how DSLR works.  It's a catch 22.

You need to set AF ON to drive the lens with the buttons... but you need to set it to MF in imaging so the the camera does try to focus.

So this is normal. Thanks! I will use the camera body switch to perform the operation.
