Focus issue Nikon D300 with lens

Hello everyone,

I have a Nikon D300 I thought of re-purposing to astrophotography and I gave BackyardNikon (trial) a try yesterday. Camera connected, I could change parameters (ISO, aperture and shutter speed) but focusing would not work. I decided to try my D500 to double check the focus issue but with the D500 I could focus without any problem. Both camera settings were similar so I wonder if there is something else to consider with older cameras such as the D300. Lenses were different but both are AF-S type lenses.

Not all cameras do pass along the focus commands to the lens.  It is a hit and miss.  Looks like you D500 does but not the D300.

I thought the D300 would focus since the camera/lens focus widgets were available when in AF mode and disappear when in manual mode. D500 it will be then when I need to control focus with BYN.
