BackyardNIKON v1 BETA 01d is ready for download.

admin

Question

YEAH... a step closer :)

*** DOWNLOAD BackyardNIKON v1 BETA 01d ***

http://www.binaryrivers.com/download/setup-BackyardNIKON-v100-BETA01d.exe

*** CHANGE LOG ***

- Change BULB sequence for D600, I'm hoping this will fix the bulb sequence not ending.

- Added Russian translation.

- New user guide, click the '?' icon in BackyardNIKON upper right corner.  It still needs attention but it will be 100% complete for production release.  The format is now a CHM help file instead of a PDF.

- Image loader bug when dragging images from Windows into imaging mode image area.

- Debug logging enhancements.

- A few other minor fixes here and there.

- A new beta license key good for another 30 days.

You can refer to this grid for a quick overview.

http://forum.otelescope.com/post/backyardnikon-v1-beta-progress-grid-6857530?pid=1282424740

Please report your findings using this thread.

As with other beta releases, the setup.exe is pre-packaged with its own tester license.

BETA 01d will install side-by-side to other betas, it will not overwrite BETA 01c.

Thank you for all your support in getting this to a production quality.

Guylain & Chris.

Hi, Guylain.  Thanks, I will.  Just to be clear though.  Whether the intervalometer is hooked up or not, the fact remains that when I click on "PHD" in BYN, BYN reports that it cannot connect to PHD.  This is before any attempt whatsoever to press the shutter release.

Clicking the PHD button in BYN does nothing; it does not even attempt to connect to PHD so no message error/success can/will be displayed.

The PHD button in BYN is a toggle button on/off used during an active imaging session to dither or not.  The connection is established between 2 images, dither is performed, then the connection is closed.

In your case, since you use and intervalometer, the connection to PHD should not be initiated... unless you press the TEST button in the setting dialog.

I need to point out that I will be putting up a simple webpage for the ordering of those cables plus instructions on my Loowit Imaging business website in the coming week.

That way the link in the CHM help file doesn't go to a login page for the forums here - instead directly to a page with information about them and how to order.

When I have the page complete, I will post the link here.

The help file has already been updated Steve and should be in the next release, either BETA01e or BETA02 :)

Guylain, I finally did some testing under clear skies tonight.  As you may recall from my thread at CN, I am trying to integrate BY Nikon, Astrotortilla and PHD into my workflow. I am particularly interested in BY Nikon's ability to dither images.  To give some background, I am using a D7000 in my setup with a Win 7 (64 bit) laptop.  I am able to plate solve with AT and autoguide with PHD.  In addition to Backyard Nikon (BYN?), I've been using another excellent application call "Digicam Control", a live view and tethering app for Nikons.  It's not specifically set up for astrophotography but it handles image downloading very quickly from camera to PC.

I was using Beta 01c tonight and encountered a number of bugs / feature requests which I'm hoping you will find useful to know.

(1) I took several shots.  Their thumbnails show up along the bottom of BYN, as expected.  However, when I put BYN into full screen mode, clicking on the thumbnails did nothing.  Furthermore, capturing new images in full screen mode showed no image whatsoever.  When I reduced the window size of BYN, I could see the images again.

(2) Had trouble connecting the D7000 to BYN.  It took several clicks on the "connect" button before the D7000 was recognized.  I know that this is not a physical connectivity problem because I could still use Windows Explorer to view the contents of the SD card inside the D7000 even though BYN was complaining that a camera was not connected.  After about 4-5 clicks on the connect button, BYN recognized the camera.

(3) Under "Imaging", I set up a plan for shooting.  I then went to "Frame and Focus".  When I went back to "Imaging", the plan had been reset.

(4) Is it possible to support the user-customizable U1 and U2 dial settings in addition to Manual Mode?  One of the things I love about the D7000 is that the U1 and U2 settings allow users to set up the camera for shooting under 2 completely different settings.  For instance, U1 is set up for regular shooting - noise reduction is on, auto-ISO is on, etc.   U2 is set up for astrophotography use - custom white balance, noise reduction is off, ISO set to 800, etc.

(5) I couldn't get AT to recognize BYN.  In AT's pull-down menu of cameras to select, only BYE is listed.  When I clicked on the BYE selection, AT could not connect to BYN in order to capture an image.

(6) Is there any way to optimize downloading and display of images from camera to PC?  The Digicam application seems snappier in this regard.

Thanks and look forward using Beta 01d the next night out.

Thank you for your notes.  As I said in the past BETA 01 is to confirm basic camera connectivity issues to ensures most cameras can connect, take pictures (bulb and non-bulb), download images, and use live view.  My answers below are provided within that context and goals for BETA 01.

(1) Please clarify full screen mode.  Windows full screen mode or the BackyardNIKON full screen presentation mode?

(2) Nikon's camera are not straightforward to connect to.  When the Nikon SDK first sees the camera is builds a file structure of all the images in the card before allowing any software to take control over it.  This may take a few minutes if you have hundreds of picture on your camera card.  The only solution is to remove all pictures from the card... or remove the card.  This is NOT a BackyardNIKON issue and there is nothing I can do sadly, my only recourse is education <_>

(3) I will look at that when I move to BETA02, the plan should not have been reset so if it did it is a bug.

(4) U1 and U2 settings are wild cards and not even BackyardEOS uses them.  This is not on my list at the moment.

(5) BackyardNIKON uses the same communication methods to connect to AT.  Please read these instructions.

(6) No.  DigiCam does just that... download and display images.  BackyardNIKON does much, much more because it is designed purposely for astrophotography.  I read the exif data, I add exif data, I read the raw image data, build the histogram, etc... This is a non issue in the context of long exposure photography because on most computers the post download processes will take 15 to 30 seconds (on slower computer) and this is done in a background task while the next picture is taken... so the net lost (in time) is only the physical image download which only takes a few seconds at most.

Hope this helps,

Hi, Guylain.  As per numbering above:

(1) This happens when I click on the maximize window icon on the very top-right of the BYN window.

(2) Ah.  I did not know this. Will try a new SD card tonight.

(3) Thanks

(4) Ok.  Too bad :-(

(5) Thanks again.  Did not see this.

(6) Again, thanks for the clarification.

It did help!  ;-)

Hi,

I tested 01d with Nikon D800.  Connection is fine.  LV is fine.  Normal single exposures are

also fine, just like the 01c version on D800.  Here are the problems:

1. The multiple Bulb exposure problem is still there.  I can take one Bulb exposure without

problems.  However, BYN only takes one exposure even if I asked it to take several ones.

2. The progress counting is sometimes out of sync from what the camera is actually doing.

For example, I was making 2-sec exposures.  Sometimes only after the exposure finished,

the count down starts 1, 2...  This doesn't happen all the time.

The log file is attached.

Cheers,

Wei-Hao

Thanks Wie-Hao, looks like I may not be able to resolve this without a D800 in hand <_>

It looks like I will have to go rent a D800 for a weekend, lock myself in the man cave, and won't come out until I fix it.

I'll look at your log files, I may see more evidence of what the issue really is.

Wei-Hao,

Do you have a serial or DSUSB cable?  I'm interested to see if you would get the same error.

If yes go to advance settings and enable "Force Serial Cable" then select your cable in Imaging Mode.  Try bulb again with the serial cable.

Ah.... sorry that I don't have such a cable.

I will ask around to see if some astrophoto-fan in my country has it.

If yes, then I can borrow it for testing.  But I suspect this will not be

as fast as you borrowing a D800.

Wei-Hao

Had an interesting number of things happen last night with the new version.  I had the memory card installed in the D5100.  I set the camera and the program to save raw and jpg.  To both save on the camera and computer.  It did not save in the camera.  Neither saved the jpg.  No matter what folder I specified it would only save the pictures in the default folder.  It never showed any pictures taken or live view even though pictures were taken and saved to default folder.  It also would not save the name of the files even if I specified it.  Did I set something wrong??

The rule of thumb I've found, is to take the SD card out of the camera and have it write straight to the computer. I have an 8gb SD card that as of this post, is two-thirds full and BackyardNIKON has a hell of a time finding the camera with the card present. In my experience through the three beta versions released thus far, BackyardNIKON performs MUCH better if there were NO SD card present in the camera itself.

If I remove the card, it connects to my D5100 instantly.

As I have said in previous post... the Nikon SDK is the culprit here [bawl]

The SDK goes into a spin creating a full folder/image structure when it see the camera at first.  This can take several minutes before it allows the camera to connect.  I wish there was a setting but there is not.  The only recourse I have is education and the only solution is to have no images (or very few) on your card or no card at all sadly.

Any software built  using the Nikon SDK will suffer from the same behavior <_>

Hope this helps,

Hello.

First of all thank you for your works.

I have a problem. I have Nikon D5100. I install program succesfully. After open BackyardNIKON and connect the D5100 to the computer. Last i click "Connect" and program connected. All its fine. No problem, and I can take picture.

But after i close the program or disconnect D5100. Again open BackyardNIKON and connect the D5100. And i click "Connect", programs says "Camera not found". I tried again and again. Same results. So my program works successfully only first opening. Later can't connect. I try deinstall / install my D5100 drivers, restart computer, and run as administrator BackyardNIKON. They didn't solve.

I have two computer. One of Macbook and i installed Parallels and used on Windows 8. Second one Dell - Windows 8 default. Both of on my computer have same problem. After first successfully running program doesn't connect any more.

What can i do and what you suggest. Am I do wrong thing?

If you want more information (for example log file..) i can give you.

Thank you again.

Have nice day.

Note: Sorry for my bad English.

Hi Guylain,

A friend of mine tried 01d with D800 and a DSUSB cable.

He reported that everything works fine, including multiple Bulb exposures.

Hope this helps to identify the problem.

Hi, I looked at your log files and it appears that the SDK does not even see the camera.  If it would evidence of this would be in the log files with "Camera : D5100 is available".

We need to find out why and when we do it should work.

Reboot your computer, do NOT start BackyardNIKON, and try the following.

Connect your camera to the computer and turn ON the camera, do you see it in Windows and can you browse to the SD card and see the images in Windows?

Keep me posted please.

I can't answer for Guylain but based upon my experience, you need to remove the SD card completely.

I have the exact same issue with mine and the only way it will connect is to have absolutely NO SD card present in the card slot when using BackyardNIKON.

I can see SD card :) Can't connect.

Even after a Reboot?

Can you post the logfiles?  I'll be able to tell you if the SDK sees the camera or not.

My images do not seem to be downloading to the laptop using a D5100. The laptop is running Windows XP and works fine with Backyard EOS V3.03. It downloads the first 3 or so then they keep queuing up until eventually the laptop locks up. There are several BinaryRivers.BackgroundWorker processes running (7+) using large amounts of CPU. Log attached.

Send me the background worker process logs as well.  This is new stuff and I need to find out why they are blocking.  These additional log files may help.
