Nikon D7100

Question

Hey guys,

I've been using Backyard Nikon with a D300, obtained the DSUSB cable from shoestring astronomy to shoot bulb. Unfortunately the D300 is incredibly noisy so I've been considering getting a new camera specifically for AP.

My friend was kind enough to lend me her D7100 and I'm very excited to test it out. I notice it has an 8-pin female plug very different than the D300. How would I go about connecting it to my laptop using BYN to perform exposures below/including 30 seconds? Would a usb to 8pin cable work?

How about for bulb settings, would I then just use the DSUSB with an 8pin to 3.5mm stereo plug?

As always, your help is greatly appreciated and clear skies!

Adam

Thanks Guylain,

How about shooting bulb with mirror lock on? Or would mirror lock with very long exposures >30s be somewhat irrelevant?...

I picked up the usb-to-8-pin cable from Henry's and it's shooting beyond 30s. However without attaching it via DSUSB I cannot utilize mirror lock.

Cheers!

Mirror lock is useless for images > than a few seconds.  You don't need it.  People want to use it because it is a feature but it has no value in long exposure photography.

If you really want to use it though go to Settings -> Advance Settings and set Force use serial cable on, then select DSUSB in the capture plan and the DSUSB will be used.

Great! Thanks for the info. I'm in Toronto so I imagine you guys up in Ottawa have been dealing with the dreadful overcast too. At least the temperature's rising, clear skies boys!
