    Optec: The second generation NGM 0.33X MAXfield telecompressor is perfect for the SBIG ST-7 class CCD cameras with or without a color filter wheel. The NGM is especially well-suited for most C-mount cameras including the Mallincam Video CCD cameras.

    Designed specially for the classic Meade and Celestron SCT's, the NGM yields an incredible f/3.3 effective focal ratio (EFL) on native f/10 systems. When used with an f/11 classic C-14, the NGM will yield an EFL of f/3.7. Results may vary slightly depending upon the imaging train configuration.  Best results will be obtained when used with the TCF-S Temperature Compensating Focuser.T

    The optical design of the NextGEN 0.33X was performed using Zemax and optimized for four field points using wavelengths of 450, 550 and 650 nm.  The goal was for the smallest blur diameters for the four field points. The system was modeled using the actual optical prescription for a SCT with the inherit aberrations of this telescope. The resulting lens curvatures of this designed were made without adjusting the radii to the optical lab's tool list. Custom tools were made for all surfaces.

    Optec: The Ultra WideField 0.7XL is a coupler from Optec and is designed specifically to speed up the focal ratios of highly corrected telescope systems. This design assumes that the image formed by the telescope is reasonably flat and aberration free. If so, the resulting image will also be highly corrected and nearly parfocal with the original image. Optimized for an f/8, the Ultra WideField 0.7XL will work for any focal ratio in the range of f/5.6 to f/20. The field is highly corrected up to 18mm in diameter and would work well even with larger fields with only slight degradation near the corners.

    Like the other reducers in the NextGEN series, all surfaces have a broadband multilayer coating optimized for the 450 - 650 nm pass band of the optic. Filter mounted in front as with the IFW are compatible. In fast systems, it is always better optically to mount the filters in front of any reducer optic to keep the incoming rays closer to being normal (collimated) to the filter surface.

    The Ultra WideField 0.7XL was redesigned and improved in late 2006 and now has a much longer back-focus distance and uses the same mounting plate adapters as the 0.33X and 0.50X models. This allows use of this reducer with SBIG cameras having the CFW-8/10 filter wheels mounted.

    Optec: Mechanically, the TCF-S is a robust Crayford style motorized focuser with high repeatability, no play and nearly zero backlash of only 0.0013 inch. Optec's implementation is ideal for applications which require exact focus such as CCD imaging or film astrophotography. A geared stepper motor rotates the drive shaft with one step rotation of the motor equal to a 0.000086 inch movement of the drawtube. The unit adds 3.5 inches to the telescope's back-focus as measured from the front to the end of the drawtube when at the mid-focus position. The total travel of the drawtube is 0.6 inches or 7000 steps. A pair of pushbuttons control the direction of focus and the DRO (digital read-out) displays the current position. The TCF-S focuser can easily handle cameras and instrument packages weighing up to 10 pounds. The TCF-S can be used by itself or with a PC for automatic focus with some of the popular camera control software.

    Optec: The TCF-S has a new big brother - the TCF-S3i. This 5 pound focuser has all the same features of the TCF-S but is just bigger and stronger. With the every increasing size of CCD cameras and associated instruments, the need for a precision digital focuser that can take the weight and is compatible with most of the camera control software available is now met. Focuser control is now accomplished via direct serial connection between the focuser and computer. 

    No corners were cut with this model. The massive drawtube has a 3.00-inch I.D. and is made from 7075, the strongest of the commercial aluminum alloys. To prevent any slippage common to Crayford style focusers, the drive rod is pressed onto the drawtube with a force of about 500 pounds. The TCF-S3i can take this extreme pressure because the drive rod is made from a ground bar of high speed steel with a diameter of 0.375 inch. Hardened rails of stainless steel are embedded in the drawtube to engage the drive rod and take the strain. 

    The total linear travel of the drawtube is 1.00-inch with a resolution of 0.0001-inch. Like the TCF-Si, serial computer interface and digital display control all functions of the TCF-S3i. All other features of the TCF-S3i are similar to the TCF-S. It uses the same cables, temperature probe, but focuser control is now accomplished via direct serial connection between the focuser and computer. A 6-inch bronze worm gear and stainless worm rotate the center tube with a resolution of 0.01875 degree per step from the stepper motor. The operating software is very similar to the smaller Pyxis so that existing third-party software is compatible. De-rotation of the field for long exposure images with alt-azimuth mounted telescope and rotation of the guide chip for SBIG camera to a suitable bright guide star are the two primary uses of this instrument.

    This is the Optec 3000 version. A standard Optec-3600 adapter will mount on the telescope side. An Optec-3000 3" receiver will mount on the camera side. (This is the direct replacement for the older style Pyxis – uses all 3" camera adapters.)

    This model is large and heavy and is intended for larger telescopes on observatory-caliber mountings. The 51.5mm (2.03") thickness requires telescopes that can accommodate this increase in the available back-focus distance.     Optec: Optec's #19405 Lepus-STL is a special version of the Lepus telecompressor featuring a male STL 2.156"x24tpi thread in place of the standard OPTEC-2100 dovetail.  Designed especially for the SBIG STT-8300/FW8G/AO8 camera combination, many users prefer the threaded attachment over the dovetail and setscrew arrangement of the NextGEN and standard Lepus telecompressors.

    The Lepus-STL version is compatible with the #19395 and #19397 VLC Variable Length Camera adapters and the optional #19391 STL to T-thread adapter.  Be sure to set the back-focus distance correctly for your camera system.  Back focus diagrams can be found at the bottom of this page.

    Optec: Standard Edition Lepus 0.62X telecompressor lens designed for use with any telescope having the TCF-S or other 2-inch focuser in place.  Works well with Meade ACF f/10 and f/8 coma-free SCT telescopes.  The Lepus 0.62X Standard Edition is housed in a 2-inch barrel-like assembly and will fit into any telescope receiver for standard 2-inch eyepieces.

    The camera side connection for the Lepus 0.62X telecompressor is a broad dovetail known as the OPTEC-2100.  The proper back-focus distance to the camera image plane is maintained with Optec's custom camera-specific Lepus mounts available separately below.  The OPTEC-2100 interface also allows easy connection to the Pyxis 2" rotator in place of the standard 2-inch nosepiece.  When connected to the camera, Lepus will appear as a long 2-inch nosepiece that fits into any 2-inch focuser or eyepiece receiver. 

    Special DSLR adapters are available from stock for Canon and Nikon cameras which hold and maintain the 100mm on-axis back-focus distance. 

    The Lepus can be used with other telescope designs but is not parfocal.  Therefore, some re-focusing will be required.  Performance is not guaranteed with all telescope optical designs and the Lepus is not recommended for use with Ritchey-Chretien telescopes.

    Optec: Special Edition Lepus telecompressor for the Celestron EdgeHD C9.25 Telescope

    Special Considerations for C9.25 EdgeHD OTA

    The Celestron C9.25 EdgeHD OTA is unique among Celestron's EdgeHD models with a slightly slower primary mirror compared to the other SCT telescopes produced.  Like the other EdgeHD models, a full aperture corrector plate and 3-element corrector  lens group in the baffle tube make the C9.25HD is a fully aplanatic SCT design.  The C9.25HD features an optimized back-focus of 146mm and native focal ratio of about f/9.9.  The field is flat with an image circle approximately 42mm in diameter. 

    Attaching the Lepus-HD C9.25 Edition telecompressor to the back of the OTA will yield an approximate f/6.4 light cone at the recommended on-axis back-focus distance of 96mm. The effective field of view is reduced to 28mm with some light loss beyond about 24mm which is correctable with good flat-fielding techniques.  Because the C9.25HD corrector lens group is mounted very close to the end of the baffle tube at the exit port (see diagram), the Lepus-HD C9.25 Edition includes a 5mm thick aluminum spacer to ensure the corrector lenses and telecompressor lens do not make physical contact.

    Optec: Optec has developed the NGC 316 corrector, the first in our series of 3" telecompressors. We designed this corrector specifically for the classic Meade 16" Schmidt Cassegrain Telescope. With custom designed, well-corrected optics compensating for the inherent aberrations in the original large SCT design, this new four-element system can provide ACF-like performance at a fraction of the cost. With plenty of back-focus for filter wheels, off-axis guiders or deep chip cameras, the NGC 316 can fully illuminate CCD cameras having chips up to 35mm diagonal and beyond. A typical f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope becomes an f/7.5 highly corrected optical system optimized for CCD imaging.

    The four-element NGC 316 corrector is the only optical system available to improve the optics of the classic Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope out to 35mm diagonals.

    Using Zemax optical design software Optec engineers set about to develop a 3-inch optical corrector to be used with cameras having CCD and CMOS sensors up to 35mm across.  A reduction factor of 0.75X was chosen to provide a faster system than the native f/10 and f/11 SCT designs currently available.  Using the same design philosophy as the smaller, 2-inch NextGEN line of telecompressors, a camera-specific mounting plate holds the CCD sensor at exactly the correct focal point for a fully optimized image and exact 0.75X reduction.

    Optec: The new Optec Pyxis LE is a low profile, lightweight, and versatile Camera Field Rotator with standard mechanical interfaces for ease of connectivity. Based on a design by Ted Agos of the Acorn Hollow Observatory, the Pyxis LE is the thinnest camera field rotator available today! 

    The telescope side of the Pyxis LE is a simple two-inch "push-fit" barrel. The long barrel adapter, just short of 2-1/2 inches, is easily inserted into any 2" focuser such as the Optec TCF-S Temperature Compensating Focuser. Combined with the TCF-S or TCF-Si, the Pyxis LE creates a focuser/rotator combination requiring less than 4-1/2 inches of back-focus. 

    The camera side of the Pyxis LE is a standard male T-thread. Any T-thread camera, filter wheel, off-axis guider, or industry standard T2 ring can screw directly on to the exit port of the Pyxis LE - no other adapters are required. All of the users existing accessories - T-thread spacers, off-axis guiders, filter wheels, etc. - can be attached directly. With the Pyxis LE, the confusion typically surrounding adapters is eliminated since the Pyxis LE is ready to use out-of-the-box. Simply attach your camera, slip into a 2-inch focuser, and you're ready to go. 

    The Pyxis LE is ideally suited for small, well-balanced cameras such as the QSI, Fish Camp, Starlight Xpress or SBIG ST-series CCD cameras. Canon and Nikon DLSR cameras will attach directly using an optional T2 bayonet ring. Optional T-thread extender rings can be added in 7.5 and 15mm lengths for additional offset to avoid filter wheel stepper motors such as with the SBIG CFW9. 

    f/6.3 Telecompressor Optics Integration... 

    The Pyxis LE can also accommodate Schmidt-Cassegrain f/6.3 optics (or any 43mm diameter optical system) without adding additional back focus. The f/6.3 telecompressors available from Celestron, Meade, Antares and Hirsch fit directly into the 2-inch nosepiece of the Pyxis LE. The optics must first be removed from their original housing and then using a pair of optional retainers the optical elements can be inserted anywhere within the 2" barrel of the rotator. Optec technicians will install customer supplied lenses for a nominal fee. This feature is essential when setting critical telecompressor or field flattener spacing to the imaging sensor. It should also be noted that the optics rotate with the camera so additional flat-fields are usually not required for different position angles. 

    The mechanical design is exceptionally robust and rigid. The Pyxis LE's rigidity is due to two coaxial thrust bearings that provide support for small to medium sized instrument loads (2.5kg or 5.5 lbs. maximum). The large separation distance between bearing surfaces (2.28") further increases the stability of the Pyxis LE. This permits off-axis guiders, filter wheels, AO units and of course, the CCD camera, to be attached with no flexure. This unique bearing arrangement allows the rotator to be very thin and use only 0.68" of back focus. 

    Interface Software and ASCOM Driver... 

    Interfacing with the computer is also extremely simple. Just plug in the USB and 12VDC cables, let Windows install the drivers automatically, open up Pyxis-LE Control, watch it automatically connect, and start using your rotator. Additionally, the Pyxis LE is ASCOM compliant so it can be used in programs like Maxim DL. Intelligent anti-cable wrapping is programmed at the firmware level so you can expect a non-binding experience with both the control program and the ASCOM driver. 

    Easy to use Windows application allows simple control over your Pyxis LE camera field rotator. Graphical position indicator allows for quick adjustments and instantaneous position feedback. 

    The View menu enables users to hide/show certain regions of the application to reduce overall window clutter.

    Optec: New Design Concept:

    Optec engineers have developed a completely new concept for combining telescope focus and camera rotation functions into a single robust, yet compact package. Rather than simply adding a rotator onto the end of a focuser drawtube, Gemini was designed from inception with a rotating drawtube providing superior strength and rigidity for heavy camera payloads. Featuring four lead-screws and four linear bearings, Gemini can easily handle 10 kg (22 lbs) payload packages without flexure. Full 360 degree rotation is a built-in function of the Gemini with a full 1/2" of linear travel. At the midpoint, Gemini measures a mere 2.5" in thickness.

    Temperature Compensation:

    Like all Optec focuser products, Gemini includes a remote temperature probe for automatic temperature compensation. Simply attach the temperature probe anywhere in the linear response zone of your OTA (usually the tube or truss assembly) and Gemini will automatically keep the camera package in sharp focus. The Gemini Commander software provides a convenient wizard to help determine your telescope´s TC or temperature coefficient.

    Robust Compact Design:

    To maintain a flat, rigid base for heavy camera packages, Gemini´s shell consists of two parallel plates machined from MIC-6 tool plate providing flatness within 0.001" (25 microns). Seven precise stand-off spacers maintain the 2.25" separation of these plates. The rotating drawtube is moved linearly with 1/2" of total travel using a premium timing belt driven by a high torque stepper motor. The entire package is accented with a beautiful carbon fiber wrap. Dual RJ45 connectors provide connection to the Gemini Control hub. The independent rotating drawtube is supported by a custom X-cage bearing system supported by large, 6 mm chrome ball bearings.

    Dual Function Control with Multiple Options

    Support for Multiple Telescope:

    Featuring identical OPTEC-4300 mechanical interfaces front and back, the Gemini can be easily fitted to most any large telescope OTA. Recessed oval point setscrews provide three-point direct contact with the heavy wall OPTEC-4300 dovetail mount. Gemini´s clear aperture of 3.75" is maintained through each adapter, passing even large light cones through to the camera image plane without vignetting.

    On the camera side, a typical configuration might include a 4300 receiver for the Optec DSI 3.5 High Performance spacer sets configurable to 1/4" increments when additional spacing is needed.

    Currently designed telescope adapters include support for the AG Optical iDK´s, Ceravolo Optical Systems Astrographs, Meade 16-inch class SCT, and Plane Wave Secure Fit.

    Multiple Ways to Connect:

    The Gemini Control hub acts as the central controller to link both focuser and rotator to any control PC. The hub includes communication ports for Serial and USB (using Optec´s USB/Serial cable) and wired Ethernet Network protocols as standard. An optional WiFi board and antenna can be added and installed at any time. Focuser and Rotator ports are available at the top of the Gemini hub with 12 VDC Power, Network, optional Hand Control, and Serial connection ports available at the bottom.

    Multiple Options Available:

    Each Gemini package comes complete with everything needed to connect. An optional Hand Control allows manual access while at the telescope. WiFi add-on board mounting plate, precision external temperature probe, and motor-specific cables round out a complete integrated package.

    Coming Soon - 802.11 WiFi Option:

    Using the ASCOM Local Server model, Optec´s Gemini Commander software allows multiple clients to connect simultaneously to the Gemini hub. Soon to be released embedded webservers in the wired Ethernet and WiFi connections enable Gemini to generate a control interface accessible through any web browser or smartphone. Free Android and iPhone applications search the local network and load the interactive webpages. Because these pages are generated by the hub itself, once you are connected, there is no further configuration required: just connect to Gemini and enjoy remote wireless focus control with the optional 802.11 WiFi add-on.
