  2. CentralDS:At last we launched the upgraded CDS-600D with new design as the name of CDS-600D II and CDS-600D II Pro with more powerful cooling.

    Drop-In filter holder for 2 inch astronomical filters is equipped in these cameras.

    CDS-600D is designed to be a remote controlled camera without LCD screen with only basic function of camera but it can dramatically enhance the image quality in low light photography.

    After 600D, Until now CANON continued to open new DSLR models named 650D, 700D.

    650D and 700D are also having 18 Mega pixels and this are same to 600D’s. The major improvement of these latest models were made at the area of AF or Movie function or user interfaces. Long ago we deeply tested 650D and 700D compared to 600D and we found a astonishing facts that the 600D’s image quality is more stable and good with lower noise than that of 650D or 700D in case of low light, high iso, long time exposure photography.

    We guess that the modified image processing algolism caused by hybrid AF sensor pixels on CMOS produce bad results of low light imaging.

    After 650D, 700D launched, the price of 600D became more good and CANON did not discontinue 600D and we can easily buy it at the market until now.

    We stopped the 650D, 700D project and started the work for CDS-600D upgrade.

    The main design concept of CDS-600D II is based on that of CDS-5D. 3parts configuration(= Body, Adapter, Cooler) and Temperature controller were applied. The shape of CDS-600D II became so similar to that of CDS-5D but smaller.

    The module parts are compatible with CDS-5D and economical and consistent quality control and improvement will be possible.

    There was a big loss and it’s mechanical shutter in front of imager sensor.

    To equip the Drop-In filter system, there is needed the space between lens mount and Image sensor. We removed the shutter blades and moved the shutter body to the side of CMOS. And camera body was became a low profile body as that of CDS-5D and the space for drop-in filter holder was prepared. CDS-600D II was became [B shutter only ] camera like CDS-5D. But using USB connection to PC and control software(EOS Utility, BackyardEOS, etc.,) you can set the exposure time by 1 second.

    In CDS-600D, we provided [movie mode/Manual Exposure Mode] selection Switch. We found that most users do not take [Movie] using CDS-600D camera. And when we  design CDS-600D II, we disabled [movie mode] and made this camera to only still frame camera for astro imaging.

    Two types of cooler concept are in CDS-600D II,

    One is a traditional full size cooler module like that of CDS-5D’s and another is simple and thin cooler module.

    CDS-600DII with the former style cooler is [CDS-600D II Pro] and the latter style is [CDS-600D II].

    [CDS-600D II] is having lighter, smaller body shape with [Ambient -23°C  (+2~-2°C)] cooling performance.[CDS-600D II Pro] body is more heavy and bigger but it’s cooling performance is more higher and reach to[Ambient temperature -33°C  (+2~-2°C)].

  4. ZWO Optical: The ASI178MM-Cool Monochrome Camera allows the sensor to be cooled to 35C to 40C degrees below ambient. ASI178MM has a 1/1.8″ and 6.4M pixels sensor IMX178 with SONY STARVIS and Exmor R Technology. 

    The brand ZWO now has its range of cameras cooled: a double-stage TEC cooling regulated, lowers the temperature of the camera ASI 178 MM-C between -35 ° and -40 ° C below the ambient temperature. These cooling performances make it easy to photograph deep objects, such as galaxies, nebulae and other clusters of stars.

    It is equipped with a very quiet fan, which allows to eliminate any source of superfluous heat produced by the electrical supply of the camera. A red LED indicates the activation of thermoelectric cooling. The power supply for the camera cooling (optional) is rectified and operates in 12V with a power of 2 amperes (2A), which makes it possible to operate the camera in the field, away from any urban light pollution.

    It is also equipped with an anti-icing system (desiccant type) which keeps the sensor dry for more than a year. When frost appears on the sensor, it is easy to replace the desiccant by simply unscrewing the body of the camera for easy access to the imaging sensor chamber.

    The relatively small diameter of the camera housing (78 mm) allows the coupling in fast-star mode on Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, in order to obtain a short "focal / diameter" ratio for astrophotography Fast to very large field. This mode consists of replacing the secondary mirror by the camera with reduced diameter, allowing maximum light to pass to the primary mirror of the telescope.

    In planetary mode, its acquisition speed reaches the rate of 60 images / second at the resolution of 3096 x 2080 pixels. This acquisition speed makes it possible to "freeze" the turbulence in planetary imaging and thus to obtain a final image provided with numerous details. Its large field makes it possible to bring on the sensor, the satellites of the giant planets in a single shot.

    This acquisition speed can be pushed to 479 fps when used at lower resolution (320 x 240 pixels).

    For autoguiding, the camera is equipped with a standard ST4 port, adaptable to a very large number of commercial frames. Used for example with the free software PHD2 Guiding, this one proves to be very effective, with a final result composed mostly of images perfectly guided. Autoguiding can be performed with an accuracy to the tenth of a pixel. This asset makes it possible to use a relatively short focal length guide instrument in relation to the imaging instrument. Such precision requires meticulous parameterization of the PHD2 Guiding software. The camera also works with the free software MetaGuide.

    In the astronomic application field, Sony IMX183CLK-J (monochrome) and IMX183CQJ-J (color) sensors uses a very high sensitivity back-illuminated structure with high resolution 2.4 μm square unit pixel.  The optical size is 1 inch.

    Astrophotography Performance
    The ASI183 cameras has a very large full well capacity(15000e) for such small pixel size, 1.6e read noise @ 30DB, and 12stops dynamic range @ Gain=0. The ASI183 cameras also utilize firmware features to minimize amplifier glow for maximum performance in astrophotography.

  40. Atik Cameras: Atik’s top-of-the-range camera is the result of extensive design and development. It incorporates a huge 37mm x 25mm sensor, and is the camera for the uncompromising user who is looking to create stunning high-resolution images.The Atik 11000 uses the Kodak KAI 11002 CCD, and is available in mono or one-shot color versions. It is difficult to get an impression of just how big the sensor is without seeing it at first-hand, but the graphic is intended to give you some idea. The resulting images can be amazingly detailed. They can be printed out at A3 size or beyond, or simply enjoyed on a computer monitor.

    Common features of the Atik 4000 and Atik 11000

    The other cameras in the Atik range use Sony sensors, but the large-format cameras incorporate Kodak devices. These have gained a great reputation in astrophotography, and offer qualities not available in the Sony CCDs. However, optimum performance from the Kodak chip is only obtained with the use of highly sophisticated control electronics and advanced cooling systems, and this is where Atik’s design and build expertise comes to the fore.

    The Kodak sensors require dark frames to be used for calibration, and these must be taken at the same temperature as the primary image. The Atik 11000 achieves this through the provision of full set-point temperature regulation using a two-stage Peltier element and fan. This can provide cooling to 38 degrees below ambient, and will be suitable for the majority of conditions.

    For more demanding use, water can be pumped through the camera’s internal heat exchanger. When water cooling is employed, the maximum level of cooling depends on the water temperature. Approximately 45 degrees of cooling can be achieved using water from a typical cold tap.

    Such efficient cooling cuts thermal noise to an absolute minimum and reduces the prevalence of hot pixels, but it raises the risk of condensation forming in – or on – the camera. A high-efficiency desiccant is used to dry the air inside the sensor chamber, so preventing internal condensation. Meanwhile, condensation on the outside of the camera is avoided through the use of heater elements which gently warm the window. The power supplied to this heater is controllable through software so that it can be adapted to the environmental conditions.

    The Atik large-format cameras have been designed and built to meet the needs of the most demanding users, yet offer an unparalleled simplicity of use. They have only two sockets – a 2.1mm socket for the 12V power supply, and a USB2 port for communicating with your computer. The cameras are also compatible with our highly acclaimed Capture software, as well as with Astroart, CCDSoft and Maxim DL.

    CCD Grades

    The Atik 11000 is fitted with a KAI 11002 class II sensor as standard. This allows for a small number of column defects. Alternatively, a class I sensor with no column defects can be specified. Does the CCD grade matter? Well, we feel the price premium placed on the class I sensor is not justified when the camera is going to be used for astro-imaging.

    In short, this is because Kodak’s grading system uses a test in which the CCD is not cooled; exposures are for fractions of a second; and the sensor is read out several times a second. But conditions for the sensors are very different in astro-imaging because the sensor is cooled; exposures are typically for many tens of seconds; and readout takes several seconds. It is also expected that the images will be corrected with a dark frame. The upshot is that Kodak’s grading tests do not reflect astro-imaging performance in a useful way.

    Note on sensors

    We use only the latest generation of KAI 11002 sensors, which have anti-reflection coatings on both sides of the glass cover. This reduces reflection artifacts generated between the CCD surface and the cover.

  46. Atik Cameras: Its compact size and light weight make it a joy to use on telescopes large and small. The senor used is the fantastically sensitive 1.3 million pixel ICX445 EXview II CCD from Sony. The GP is capable of up to 30 frames per second and will download both 8 bit data with the convenience of saving to standard avi file format, or 12 bit for full dynamic range as Tif and Fits format.

    When used with the included GPAcquire software the camera is fully configurable with gain, region of interest, data format and a myriad of other settings enabling optimal planetary, solar and lunar imaging. Data can be save direct to disk or initially to memory to optimise frame rates with slightly slower hardware. Slowing things down a little the advanced passive cooling allows images of 1mS to several seconds to be collected, ideal for guiding. The camera is fully compatible with existing Atik software so can be used with our (included).

    Capture software as well as plug ins for Maxim DL, AstroArt, and more though the ASCOM camera interface. Controlled this way it behaves much the same as our bigger cameras and will allow binning and sub framing. Guiding corrections are passed to the mount using an ASCOM interface. This is presents many advantages over the older ST4 guide port method including ease of set up, logging, and precision of guide corrections. But it does require that the mount is ASCOM compatible (as most modern mounts are) and linked to the computer. Guiding older mounts may still be possible with an USB to ST4 converter box, ask your dealer.

    The GP does not have the active cooling of the Atik Titan so its potential for deep sky imaging is more limited, but it can be used to image the brighter deep sky objects.

  50. Atik Cameras: Atik’s top-of-the-range camera is the result of extensive design and development. It incorporates a huge 37mm x 25mm sensor, and is the camera for the uncompromising user who is looking to create stunning high-resolution images.The Atik 11000 uses the Kodak KAI 11002 CCD, and is available in mono or one-shot color versions. It is difficult to get an impression of just how big the sensor is without seeing it at first-hand, but the graphic is intended to give you some idea. The resulting images can be amazingly detailed. They can be printed out at A3 size or beyond, or simply enjoyed on a computer monitor.

    Common features of the Atik 4000 and Atik 11000

    The other cameras in the Atik range use Sony sensors, but the large-format cameras incorporate Kodak devices. These have gained a great reputation in astrophotography, and offer qualities not available in the Sony CCDs. However, optimum performance from the Kodak chip is only obtained with the use of highly sophisticated control electronics and advanced cooling systems, and this is where Atik’s design and build expertise comes to the fore.

    The Kodak sensors require dark frames to be used for calibration, and these must be taken at the same temperature as the primary image. The Atik 11000 achieves this through the provision of full set-point temperature regulation using a two-stage Peltier element and fan. This can provide cooling to 38 degrees below ambient, and will be suitable for the majority of conditions.

    For more demanding use, water can be pumped through the camera’s internal heat exchanger. When water cooling is employed, the maximum level of cooling depends on the water temperature. Approximately 45 degrees of cooling can be achieved using water from a typical cold tap.

    Such efficient cooling cuts thermal noise to an absolute minimum and reduces the prevalence of hot pixels, but it raises the risk of condensation forming in – or on – the camera. A high-efficiency desiccant is used to dry the air inside the sensor chamber, so preventing internal condensation. Meanwhile, condensation on the outside of the camera is avoided through the use of heater elements which gently warm the window. The power supplied to this heater is controllable through software so that it can be adapted to the environmental conditions.

    The Atik large-format cameras have been designed and built to meet the needs of the most demanding users, yet offer an unparalleled simplicity of use. They have only two sockets – a 2.1mm socket for the 12V power supply, and a USB2 port for communicating with your computer. The cameras are also compatible with our highly acclaimed Capture software, as well as with Astroart, CCDSoft and Maxim DL.

    CCD Grades

    The Atik 11000 is fitted with a KAI 11002 class II sensor as standard. This allows for a small number of column defects. Alternatively, a class I sensor with no column defects can be specified. Does the CCD grade matter? Well, we feel the price premium placed on the class I sensor is not justified when the camera is going to be used for astro-imaging.

    In short, this is because Kodak’s grading system uses a test in which the CCD is not cooled; exposures are for fractions of a second; and the sensor is read out several times a second.   55. Atik Cameras: Its compact size and light weight make it a joy to use on telescopes large and small. The senor used is the fantastically sensitive 1.3 million pixel ICX445 EXview II CCD from Sony. The GP is capable of up to 30 frames per second and will download both 8 bit data with the convenience of saving to standard avi file format, or 12 bit for full dynamic range as Tif and Fits format.

    When used with the included GPAcquire software the camera is fully configurable with gain, region of interest, data format and a myriad of other settings enabling optimal planetary, solar and lunar imaging. Data can be save direct to disk or initially to memory to optimise frame rates with slightly slower hardware. Slowing things down a little the advanced passive cooling allows images of 1mS to several seconds to be collected, ideal for guiding. The camera is fully compatible with existing Atik software so can be used with our (included).

    Capture software as well as plug ins for Maxim DL, AstroArt, and more though the ASCOM camera interface. Controlled this way it behaves much the same as our bigger cameras and will allow binning and sub framing. Guiding corrections are passed to the mount using an ASCOM interface. This is presents many advantages over the older ST4 guide port method including ease of set up, logging, and precision of guide corrections. But it does require that the mount is ASCOM compatible (as most modern mounts are) and linked to the computer. Guiding older mounts may still be possible with an USB to ST4 converter box, ask your dealer.

    The GP does not have the active cooling of the Atik Titan so its potential for deep sky imaging is more limited, but it can be used to image the brighter deep sky objects.

Atik Cameras: The Atik One OAG is slightly smaller than the original Atik OAG, but has all of the original features that make it an easy-to-use off-axis guider, especially when used in conjunction with the Atik GP guide camera (sold separately). The two components match up beautifully and attach easily to an Atik One camera on one side, and your telescope on the other. You can attach the OAG assembly to your telescope using tge 2” adapter or via a T-thread accessory.

    The pickup prism inside the OAG diverts some of the light coming through your telescope and sends it to your guide camera. The prism can be adjusted to compensate for use on different types of telescopes.

    The Atik One OAG has an extremely smooth focusing mechanism that is fast and easy to adjust. To focus, all you need to do is turn the focusing ring clockwise to move the camera support down, or counter-clockwise to move it up. There is 5mm of total travel available, allowing you to easily focus the optional guide camera.
