    Flight Lakes Instrumentation: FLI 5 Position Color Filter Wheel (for 2" or 50mm diameter filters)

    At less than 7/8 of an inch thick, the CFW-1 color filter wheel is designed to closely and rigidly couple to any CCD camera. The homing device of the CFW is highly accurate and repeatable. The recessed opening of the color filter wheel securely clamps to an IMG, MaxCam, or "AD" adapter mounting flange. This setup adds a minimum distance to the light path and avoids the vignetting issues common with other designs.

    The T-mount system was introduced by Tamron in 1957 as a universal lens mount for 35mm cameras. The idea was that each lens would have a standard threaded rear flange. A camera specific adapter would then be attached at the point of sale, as needed. This greatly reduced costs since only the T-mount adapters needed to be stocked, rather than different versions of every lens.

    With T-mounts readily available for most camera bodies, it was natural for astronomy buffs to settle on it as the standard adapter for 35mm astrophotography. Without this inexpensive and easy to use adapter, astrophotography might have gotten off to a far slower start than it did. On the downside, the T-mount was designed to solve a very specific optical coupling problem in 35mm cameras. Progress in telescope design and CCD array size is revealing the T-mount as a potential bottleneck in the light path.

    Flight Lakes Instrumentation: FLI Ten Position Dual Color Filter Wheel (for 50mm square filters)

    The FLI CenterLine color filter wheels feature a centrally located aperture that presents a symmetrical mass distribution and eliminates the offset weight problems associated with virtually every other color filter wheel on the market. It is also ideal for prime focus installations where a zero or symmetric shading of the primary mirror is critical. The CL1-10 CFW presents an easier load to handle vs. a normal color filter wheel and it will not change a telescope's balance as it tracks across the sky. The FLI CenterLine also allows for filter combinations unavailable with traditional style filter wheels.

    The first FLI CenterLine to be released is the model CL1-10 which holds up to ten 50mm x 50mm square filters in two independently operated wheels. It is powered by two internally mounted stepper motors and two TruMotion synchronous belts. The internal wheels are supported by radial ball bearings that provide a smooth, quiet and repeatable operation.

    High-performance servo motors featuring rare Earth magnets coupled with backlash-free power transfer provide ultimate torque which translates to ultimate speed. Adjacent filter distance is traveled in as fast as 23ms on the HS-625 model and 30ms on the HS-1025 and HS-1032 models, while the longest distance (180 degree wheel turn corresponding to three filter positions on the HS-625 and five positions on the HS-1025 and HS-1032) is covered in 45ms on the HS-625 model and 90ms on the HS-1025 and HS-1032 models.

    Control
    The control system not only optimizes the trajectory to result in maximum speed with minimum vibration, it also adapts to the changes in load. When filters are added or removed, the controller parameters must be adjusted in order to maintain peak performance. A built-in adaptation mechanism takes care of these adjustments providing optimum performance no matter what the operating conditions are.


    Servo Motor Advantage
    Encoder feedback sensors on the servo motors enable reliable operation compared to a stepper-motor-based open-loop motion system where step skipping may occur. However, the advantages of servo motors come at a cost of increased circuitry and controller complexity. This is addressed with state-of-the-art semiconductor components, a high-performance DSP (Digital Signal Processor), and a sophisticated control algorithm.

    Filter pockets accommodate a wide selection of filters up to 9mm thick. The HS-1025 model holds up to ten filters with 25mm diameter, HS-1032 holds up to ten 32mm filters, and HS-625 holds up to six 25mm filters. Additional flexibility is provided by combining the HS-1032 wheel with optional 32mm-to-25mm adapters or other custom holders. The filters are secured in place by threaded retainers.
    Filter Access

    An oversized opening complemented by a threaded lid provide convenient access for filter replacement eliminating the need to disassemble the unit.
     
    Filter Position Indicator
    On the HS-1025 and HS-1032 models, the current filter selection as well as the position aligned with the filter replacement port is indicated through small openings near the wheel pivot. On the HS-625 model, the filter pocket index is visible when replacing the filters through the access port.
        
    Integrated Electronics
    All of the drive and control electronics facilitating the functionality of the HS-1025, HS-1032, and HS-625 models are contained in the filter wheel housing. This convenient solution eliminates the need for an external controller and the associated wiring hassles. It is still possible to operate multiple filter wheels through the same serial port by connecting them in daisy-chained mode. Simply connect a computer to the incoming port and a second wheel to the outgoing one to achieve functionality equivalent to a two-wheel system driven by a central control unit. Up to three filter wheels can be operated from the same serial port. Aside from motor drive and control circuitry, the integrated circuit board features a shutter controller allowing for a direct connection of a shutter without the need of external drive electronics.
