  2. Astro Hutech: The IDAS HEUIB-II (H-alpha Enhanced UV IR Blocking) filter is designed for enhanced spectrum DSLR's and one-shot color CCD astronomical cameras.

    Besides removing the IR and UV ends of the spectrum which are often out of focus in refractive optics, it isolates the common H-alpha line relative to the surrounding extreme red end of the spectrum, making it easy to bring out the faint H-alpha emission nebulosity of astronomical photos, yet retain the background color balance of broadband photos.

    Available in 52mm and 48mm sizes mounted in standard camera filter rings, 37mm size mounted for the Canon MFA, and unmounted in 36mm and 49mm sizes. The filter is also available as a Nikon front filter.

    Some comparison shots taken with the enhanced Canon 6DH (standard Canon UV/IR blocking filter vs. HEUIB-II filter) show a clear difference both in background sky color balance and contrast of H-alpha nebulosity in the extremely faint object IC1396. Note the good background color balance as shown in the histograms of the individual color channels of the HEUIB-II filtered image.

    The HEUIB-II filter also returns normal daylight color balance to spectrum-enhanced cameras as can be seen in this photo at right taken with normal DSLR auto-white-balance (AWB) enabled.

This critical feature assures your coatings will not peel or deteriorate from softer coatings and edge damage suffered due to post-cutting applications used by cheaper filters. With Baader filters, there's no need to be concerned that your internal DSLR conversion filter will fail unexpectedly.

    This filter is meant to be used by amateurs who are comfortable swapping out their camera's standard filter. As it has no pinkish side, this FBCF-400D filter does not require any distinct orientation.

  6. Baader: BCF 2 Astro Conversion Filter CANON EOS 5D/6D MK II

    Baader BCF Filters for Retrofitting Canon EOS full-frame cameras

    Canon Digital SLR cameras have gained a reputation as being perfectly suitable for astro-imaging in such cases where you wish to be independent from a computer.

    The cameras have many strength, but they also have a weakness: The IR cut filter which is integrated in the camera cuts off a large portion of the important red part of the spectrum - most notably of the H-alpha line. As a result red structures in nebulae (H-II regions) appear much fainter in relation to the other regions than would be normal.


    The solution: Change the integrated IR cut filter

    By exchanging the original Canon filter for a Baader BCF2 filter, you increase the sensitivity in H-Alpha by a large factor. With this filter, the camera is then even more sensitive than the legendary Canon EOS 20DA Astro camera.

    The BCF2 filter also doesn´t need the anti-aliasing layer of the original filter - Deep Sky Objects and stars are not prone to colour moire. Since the anti-aliasing layer also renders a slightly softer image, leaving it out even increases the contrast and sharpness.

    Still Suitable for Daytime Imaging:

    The new BCF2 filter can also be used within some limits for daytime photography. You will need to do a manual white balance, but then the colours appear as normal. We recommend manual white balance adjustment or the setting for "artificial light" when using the BCF2 filter.

    High-contrast edges can show colour moiré effects, this applies mainly to buildings, grids and nets.

    Installing the filter requires some technical skill. It should only be done by experienced persons.

    You even need to do some soldering in the close vicinity of the camera´s sensor!

    In addition any dust that might get between the filter and the sensor will appear sharply on the image.

  15. Optolong: This UHC, or Ultra High Contrast, filter from Optolong provides a bit more contrast than the CLS filter, but works in much the same way. By reducing the contrast-killing effects of light pollution caused by both artificial and natural sources, the background sky becomes darker, increasing the visibility of your favorite deep-sky objects. Skyglow, which is caused by neutral oxygen in the atmosphere, as well as light from high and low pressure sodium vapor lights and mercury vapor lamps are suppressed significantly, which means you can view or image from areas of heavy light pollution.

  16. Optolong: The Optolong CLS-CCD filter will improve contrast and increase the visibility of weak outer regions on most emitted, planetary and supernova residual nebulae from polluted locations in a color imaging camera.

    The infrared wavelength of 700-1100nm is cut on the Optolong CLS-CCD filter, which makes it different from the standard CLS filter and makes the CLS-CCD a photographic filter only. A separate IR-cut filter is not necessary when imaging with the CLS-CCD since the IR has already been cut.

    The Optolong CLS-CCD filter works by specifically reducing the transmission of wavelengths of light pollution, in particular the artificial type caused by vapors of sodium vapor and mercury vapor at high and low pressure. The use of a CLS-CCD filter will also increase the contrast by reducing the light radiation caused by the neutral oxygen emissions normally observed in the atmosphere.

Optolong: The Optolong H-Alpha 7nm is a very narrow emission-line filter that works by permitting a 7nm bandwidth of light, focused on the 656nm wavelength through, and blocking the transmission of contrast-killing light pollution wavelengths. Wavelengths that are in charge of natural light pollution, or skyglow, are radically decreased, as is artificial light pollution brought about by high and low pressure sodium and mercury vapor lights. The outcome is a high contrast image that uncovers the H-alpha line in all its brilliance.

    This Optolong H-Alpha EOS APS Clip filter will give a well defined contrast between the skyglow ackground and H-alpha transmitting objects, but since it has a FWHM of only 7nm, you won't see the same number of stars in the last picture as you would with the Optolong 12nm H-Alpha Filter.     Precision off-band blocking, specifically the major emission lines of artificial light pollution (i.e. Na 589nm, Hg 435nm and 578nm)
    High value transmission of pass-band and optical density of off-band is assured through Optolong’s planetary rotation system, a homogenous and precise coating procedure
    Each filter comes with a plastic case with high pressure EVA case lining
