  1. Atik Cameras: The Atik 16200 is the highest resolution astrophotography camera in the Atik Cameras range. It has the signature Atik blend of form and function, boasting an APS-H size sensor with a 35mm diagonal in a whole new case design. 

    The sensor has a generous 6µm pixel size which makes it suitable for a huge range of telescopes. The large format size of the camera makes it ideal for astrophotographers looking to capture widefield views of the night sky. It’s also an excellent match for longer focal lengths, capturing intricate details on even the smallest and faintest of objects. Whatever your astrophotography style, the large size of the images give you the freedom and flexibility to zoom in and take a closer look at regions of interest with the level of detail you’d expect from your main target.

    The large size of the sensor is a match for 2″ filters, and is perfectly complemented by the 2″ model of the EFW2. It’s also fully compatible with Atik Air, making it easy to add wifi and ethernet connectivity to your set up.

    The CCD is housed in a sealed, argon-purged chamber to create a dry, condensation free environment. We’ve also introduced a dual-stage peltier and powerful new heatsink for optimum cooling performance. At -45°C typical and a huge -50°C maximum, it’s our best delta yet. All this means you can take stunning low noise images, even when the temperature’s high outside.

    Atik’s high-quality, custom electronics power the sensor to give a read noise of just 9e-. There’s also a new blade shutter which provides consistent and reliable performance over the camera’s lifespan.

    All this is housed inside a brand new case design that gives you optimum performance with minimum fuss, making the Atik 16200 the perfect camera for astrophotographers who want large format images, without the large format price tag.

    A note on CCD Grades

    The Atik 16200 comes with a class II sensor fitted as standard. We feel that the premium prices placed on class 1 sensors just aren’t justifiable when using the camera for astrophotography. If you do require a camera with a class 1 sensor, please get in touch with your Atik dealer.

    With extensive experience in both hardware and software design, the Atik Horizon turns our expertise to the world of deep-sky optimised CMOS cameras. Already known for our low-noise electronics, the Horizon has our lowest read noise yet – just ~1e- at high gain settings. The 3.8µm pixel size is an excellent match for shorter focal lengths and camera lenses; great news if you’re looking for a wide field of view.

    Mechanically, the Horizon is based on our estblished 4-Series cameras, known for their power and adaptability. With a cyclindrical case measuring 74mm in diameter and 130mm in length, it’s compatible with HyperStar systems from 8″. The slight size increase on the 4-Series is to house a huge cooling delta of -40°C below ambient. This keeps thermal noise under control, wherever in the world you image from.

    Amp Glow Control

    From the outset, the Horizon has benefited from a built-in 256mb DDR3 image buffer to remove amp glow and other artifacts caused by data transfer over USB2, all while preventing issues with dropped frames. This makes for a seamless and fast imaging experience, whether you’re taking advantage of the flexibility and low cable weight of USB2, or the fast speeds of USB3.

    Our experience of working with demanding scientific applications has given us an advanced understanding of sealing techniques. This understanding allows us to create a condensation free environment, and means your desiccant lasts much longer between recharges. We’re using the same quartz fused cover glass as our Atik 383L+ camera to prevent condensation forming on the outside of the glass when the camera’s cooled. This added level of performance and reliability means you can spend less time maintaining your equipment, and more time imaging with it.

  3. Atik Cameras: Atik’s top-of-the-range camera is the result of extensive design and development. It incorporates a huge 37mm x 25mm sensor, and is the camera for the uncompromising user who is looking to create stunning high-resolution images.The Atik 11000 uses the Kodak KAI 11002 CCD, and is available in mono or one-shot color versions. It is difficult to get an impression of just how big the sensor is without seeing it at first-hand, but the graphic is intended to give you some idea. The resulting images can be amazingly detailed. They can be printed out at A3 size or beyond, or simply enjoyed on a computer monitor.

    Common features of the Atik 4000 and Atik 11000

    The other cameras in the Atik range use Sony sensors, but the large-format cameras incorporate Kodak devices. These have gained a great reputation in astrophotography, and offer qualities not available in the Sony CCDs. However, optimum performance from the Kodak chip is only obtained with the use of highly sophisticated control electronics and advanced cooling systems, and this is where Atik’s design and build expertise comes to the fore.

    The Kodak sensors require dark frames to be used for calibration, and these must be taken at the same temperature as the primary image. The Atik 11000 achieves this through the provision of full set-point temperature regulation using a two-stage Peltier element and fan. This can provide cooling to 38 degrees below ambient, and will be suitable for the majority of conditions.

    For more demanding use, water can be pumped through the camera’s internal heat exchanger. When water cooling is employed, the maximum level of cooling depends on the water temperature. Approximately 45 degrees of cooling can be achieved using water from a typical cold tap.

    Such efficient cooling cuts thermal noise to an absolute minimum and reduces the prevalence of hot pixels, but it raises the risk of condensation forming in – or on – the camera. A high-efficiency desiccant is used to dry the air inside the sensor chamber, so preventing internal condensation. Meanwhile, condensation on the outside of the camera is avoided through the use of heater elements which gently warm the window. The power supplied to this heater is controllable through software so that it can be adapted to the environmental conditions.

    The Atik large-format cameras have been designed and built to meet the needs of the most demanding users, yet offer an unparalleled simplicity of use. They have only two sockets – a 2.1mm socket for the 12V power supply, and a USB2 port for communicating with your computer. The cameras are also compatible with our highly acclaimed Capture software, as well as with Astroart, CCDSoft and Maxim DL.

    CCD Grades

    The Atik 11000 is fitted with a KAI 11002 class II sensor as standard. This allows for a small number of column defects. Alternatively, a class I sensor with no column defects can be specified. Does the CCD grade matter? Well, we feel the price premium placed on the class I sensor is not justified when the camera is going to be used for astro-imaging.

    In short, this is because Kodak’s grading system uses a test in which the CCD is not cooled; exposures are for fractions of a second; and the sensor is read out several times a second. But conditions for the sensors are very different in astro-imaging because the sensor is cooled; exposures are typically for many tens of seconds; and readout takes several seconds. It is also expected that the images will be corrected with a dark frame. The upshot is that Kodak’s grading tests do not reflect astro-imaging performance in a useful way.

    Note on sensors

    We use only the latest generation of KAI 11002 sensors, which have anti-reflection coatings on both sides of the glass cover. This reduces reflection artifacts generated between the CCD surface and the cover.

  14. Moravian Instruments: G4 cameras are capable to use large CCD detectors with 36 × 36 mm area, which is 50% more than the area of classical film frame. Precisely regulated cooling keeps the CCD on constant temperature, which allows quality image calibration. Cameras can be equipped also with liquid-coolant heat exchanger to cool down the hot side of Peltier TEC modules, beside the two magnetic levitating fans used in air cooled cameras.

    There is a mechanical shutter inside the camera head, filter wheel for 50 × 50 mm square filters (round filters of 50 mm diameter cause vignetting on such large CCD chips) cannot be placed inside the camera head due to limited space. But it is possible to connect external filter wheel for 5 large filters to the G4 camera, the camera head already contains connector for external filter wheel control.

    Used CCD detectors are equipped with so-called “anti-blooming gate” (ABG), which drains the over-abundant charge from saturated pixels. ABG ensures the round images of bright stars, without disruptive blooming spikes. On the other side, compromising of the CCD linearity by ABG is only negligible.
