Superimpose GPS information on video

ArtStithem

Question

An ability to superimpose time and location information from a GPS unit (e.g., the Nikon GP-1A) onto the video while recording would be a fantasic high precision capability to support asteroid or trans-neptunian object occultation events.

Perhaps, instead of a GPS location, the latitude and longitude of the connected ASCOM-compliant mount could be used.  Since it is a video I am assuming that the time would change as you play the video. Is that what you would expect to see?  What time granularity (minute, second, millisecond)? Is the accuracy of the PC system time good enough?

It is the super-accurate Time data derived from the GPS which is the most important component for most Occultation Recordings, but an Accurate GPS Location is also of significant interest as most Occultations of Asteroids and TNOs are only possible along rather narrow Ground Paths.  And for Asteroids, the exact Ground Location can actually be used to help derive a Shape Profile for the Occulting Asteroid.

But, to be useful, the accurate GPS Time Code would need to be embedded individually on each Frame - and that's a lot of additional Processing to be added to the LiveView Capture Process.  Perhaps it could be recorded into a SideCar File or Datastream and them Embedded onto the Video Frames at a more leasurely pace during the Background Process's Assembly of the AVI file...
