Dithering for unguided imaging

Xplode

Question

Adding the ability to dithering for mounts that doesn't require guiding would be great.

I'm thinking that there should be a limit to how far it would move from the initial position, maybe a circle that could be adjusted for max deviaton so lets say you set it to 15 arcsec and it would stay within the circle of 15 arcsec calculated for the first image.

I am finally up and running with my 10 Micron GM2000 II, unfortunately i cant use BYE because it lacks dithering for unguided :(

I did a test imaging without dithering and the results werent very good, as soon as i started imaging with another software that supports unguided dithering results were much better after stacking and hot pixels were removed.

How is the standing on getting unguided dithering implented?

With BackyardEOS being so easy to use and stable i would really like to be able to image with it with my current setup ;)

Hi Ole,

I too have a GM2000HPS, it's a great mount!

Chris is working on it actually, but with the summer holidays I'm afraid it did not get done in time for the 3.1.4 release a few weeks ago.  I'm hoping he will be done soon once summer is over and he gets back into it :)

Regards,

I should be getting my 10 Micron GM2000 shortly and will join in on unguided imaging...unfortunately i won't be doing any imaging for a few months since it's not dark enough during the summer here in Norway.

This would mean that BYE/BYN would need to take responsibility for the Mount Slewing Control, and have information about the Motion Orientation and the Image Scale vs Slew Rates.  t this time, PHD2 or MG handles those sort of elements of Mount Control...

I've used the dirtect mount dither on my 10 Micron GM2000 for a while and it works perfectly at shorter focal lenghts, unfrotunately at 1120mm which i mostly image at the dither is way too high even at agressiveness 1.

After a few dithers the targets moves out of the center of the image so i have to recenter so it won't move too far off.

For direct mount dithers would it be possible to have a setting for how far max movement would be in arcseconds?

Yes, that is what is means.

BYE\BYN can already slew the mount so adding a unguided dither shouldn't be much coding, just tell the mount to slew a random amount limited by a max dither value.

Something a little more work is adding dithering via goto so 10 Micron mounts will update refraction for every dither.

Mount orientation and image scale shouldn't matter if it is possible to set a dither in arcseconds. A calculator to find best values would be great, but not very important.

I do not think that BYE should provide dithering for unguided users. Most image processing applications have the capability for hot and cold pixel removal, so any dithering by BYE would be unnecessary.

However, it should be fairly simple to implement if the mount supports ASCOM MoveAxis calls. BYE could move both axes at a fixed rate for a random amount of time, subject to imposed limits.  It would not the the same as PHD or MG, but may be adequate for the needs of unguided users.
