BYEOS and the Nikon D80

maximus

Question

HI all

I am just about to buy BYEOS for the Canon. I see in the camera grid that BYEOS for the Nikon D80 has not been tested, I would like to get that also. Has anybody had any success with the D80???

Hi,

To clarify a few things, BackyardEOS is not for Nikon, BackyardNIKON is.  Your post is a little bit misleading and confusing :(

No one has tested the Nikon D80 with BackyardNIKON yet.  It does not have live view and it requires a serial cable for BULB.  You may want to download the BackyardNIKON 30 day trial and give it shot.

Regards,

Okay, so I have downloaded the free trial version of BackyardNikon and set the compatibility to vistaSP2 and it works with the Nikon D80. I can adjust the aperture, shutter speed ISO, down load images and so on. It won't work in bulb mode and because there is no live view you cannot use the frame and focus function by the looks of it. Not a problem as I can focus before and watch the images down load. Happy days. So you said I need a Serial cable for bulb. What's the deal with that? exactly which cable is required? Also, the PC i'll be using it with doesn't have a serial port.

To be honest, I already have a Canon i modded on BYEOS that works a treat. And I'll be getting a Nikon D7100 that I'll mod in the future. If I could get the little D80 running too, I'd be well chuffed.

Thanks for your help

Max

Scroll to the bottom of this page. Look under the Products column for the BackyardNikon Camera Support grid. Click there. Scroll to the bottom of the grid. Below the grid are some footnotes. Read the last footnote and click on the Shoestring Astronomy DSUSB link.  The cable connects to a USB 2.0 port on your PC.

Rick, thank you for pointing me in the right direction. Much appreciated.  :)

And, do realize that the DSUSB Purchase comes in 2-parts:

The main DSUSB Controller Box (the USB-to-Serial Converter)

A DSUSB Shutter Control Cable (specific to the style of Remote Shutter Connector on your D80)

Make sure that you are Specific when ordering from ShoeString...

(The good news is that a simple Additional Cable will adapt the same DSUSB Unit for any other Older DSLR that you might also have considered for additional AP Imaging use.)

Yep figured that out but, thanks for the prompt ;) ..I'll probably need the extension cable too.
