BYE 3.1.3 w/Windows 8.1 under OS X w/Parallels 10.2.0

rjbokleman

Question

I'm running Windows 8.1 under Parallels Desktop 10.2.0 on OS X and evaluating BYE with my Canon T5i.

Worked very well with Windows 8.1 controlling the Canon, SkySafari Pro 4.0 controlling my Celestron AVX mount from a Macbook Pro Retina (2013) running OS X Yosemite 10.10.2.

However, I found that I could hang/crash BYE consistently by turning off the camera without first clicking the Disconnect button in the UI.  The result of simply turning off the Camera, will yield the 'spinning donut of death' in Windows and then after a long period of time (5 minutes) the application crashes and then Windows 8.1 will attempt to restart it.

Seems like this is a bit of a bug.  Just wanted to report my findings to see if anyone else has experienced this with just Windows 8.1 natively or whether this is an issue with my more complex setup.  I could send the logs if needed...

The camera turn off event is caught  by BYE and should disconnect properly.  I run this test with every release so this is not an issue with native OS... but we never know.

Send me the log file and I check if the event is logged, if yes it is a bug in BYE.  If is is not logged the bug is with the camera firmware and/or the SDK not throwing the event and BYE is not even be aware that the camera has disconnected.

Even though I am running Win 7 on a PC, I tried to duplicate the OP's issue.  I found that if I the camera is connected, but idle, in BYE 3.1.3 that BYE would change to a disconnected state if I powered the camera off.  However, if it was on the Fram & Focus screen with LiveView active and I turned the camera off, BYE became unresponsive and Windows killed it.

My point is that it may depend on exactly what the user is doing with BYE when the camera is powered down/disconnected.

Ummm, that should have worked too.  I'll try that test scenario.

Thanks.

Do realize that this "Bug" could well arise from any portion of your rather convoluted OS / VM Environment.

The Bug might lay with BYE.  Or it might lay with the USB Driver Handling of any of those OS or VM Layers.

Parallels could be detecting the "Removal" of the DSLR, and Closing the USB Port before Win8 has a chance to Post the "Camera Off" event.  Or the same with Yosemite - which provides the actual lowest-level USB Driver.  Or...

That's the challenges of using an Emulator or VM ...

Which is exactly why I asked if someone using Windows 8.1 natively could check on reproducing the issue.  I could as well as I've got a couple of Lenovo tablets here.  Specifically an X220 and older X200.

I wouldn't refer to this as 'convoluted', rather, more the norm these days in our ever changing world of technology.  Microsoft Hyper-V, VMWare ESX, VMWare Fusion, Parallels are all heavily in use world wide by consumers and IT shops alike whether on premise or in the cloud.

Good observation astroman133!  It appears to happen whenever there's a 'Live Preview' going on.  Thus, when you're on the Frame & Focus, Planetary, or Drift Align panels and turn off the camera BYE hangs.  If you're on the Imaging panel...it disconnects without issue.

Thanks for the logfile.

The event is fired so it is a bug.

2015-04-04 21:06:19,436 [OnStateEventHandler] INFO  - StateEvent_Shutdown Fired! (inParameter=0)

Thank you.

You're Welcome!  As you said in one of your video demo / Q&A sessions, the feedback loop is what makes the product better.  I'm now stuck waiting on my sky's to clear again before I can head back out and try the software again.

I have windows 8.1 as well and I was able to duplicate this issue with canon T3i. I know you said that it is a bug  Guylain but I just thought I would let you know I was able to duplicate it on another win 8.1 system

I have the same last line in my log file

Also thanks for all the time and effort you put into BYEOS

Once Guylain has Nailed the Bug, there is no need to Wait for a Clear Sky...

BYE works just the same with the Body Cap, a T-Adapter, or a Lens attached.  And you can readily Connect and Fire-up BYE in the House...  (Treat it as a Bulky Webcam, if you will...)

But, it is Much More ENJOYABLE when pointed Upwards into a Clear Dark Sky!!
