About Time

Question

It looks like the time of most interest to me would be the time stamp in the file name.

But there is a strange time, to me, in the Exif data.

I setup for a 60 sec exposure and clicked on start at computer clock time 09h29m00s.  The time in the files name is 09h29m02s.  That makes sense since there was probably 2 sec before the camera opened the shutter.

In Exif>FileModifyDate the time was 09:30:05-04:00. Not sure why this is different but it's close.  The time in ModifyDate is 08:20:21.  Not close.  Since there is no reference to Daylight Savings Time in any of this data, I am not sure why this time is an hour and change early.

Still file name time is close enough for me.

Hi Guylain.

Did this request to sync camera time get any further than this thread?

I have a situation where my DSLR does not keep time at all when battery removed from camera body. A real pain!

It would be great to have the check box option in settings to either sync Camera Time to PC (or PC to Camera) on initial connection.

I've looked in the settings but cannot find anything so assume this has not been done yet.

Cheers.

Pete

No, this has not been implemented.

You are over thinking this Ned.

The time in the file name is the time in which the exposure started.

The time in the exif data is base on the camera time... It is simply not in sync with your computer time, that is why there is a difference. Just ignore the exif time.

The modified date on the actual file in windows is based on when BYE last -touched- that file after the download... Ignore that time.

The ONLY time that matters is the one in the file name... It is based on the start of the exposure.

Regards

Ned

is the time on the camera set correctly? you should be able to check this in the menu section.

Syncing the Camera's Time to the PC, and hopefully BOTH to an accurate Network Time Server, is one of the useful Tools in the Canon EOS Utility.

It'll be hard for us to say how Frequently you should perform this Sync, as different DSLRs are going to have different Internal Clock "Drift" based on the specifics of their unique components and Internal Battery / Capacitor status.

It'll be even harder for us to guess at the Accuracy of your PC Clock...  (But you can Google for instructions on setting up a NTP Sync App...)

Perhaps Guylain could consider the Theme of this Thread, and quickly look into whether the Canon SDK affords any opportunity to at least Compare the DSLR's Internal Clock to the PC Clock.

(It's possible via the EOS Utility, so its plausible that the necessary functions are exposed in the SDK...)

It would be of some value to be able to know that the Camera's EXIF DATE data can be matched to the BYE and even PHD2 Logs...

Yes, it can be done... but I have received just as many request to set the computer date to the camera date and vice versa... so it's not a one size fits all :(

Agreed, but once most folks find out that they (through you or EOS Utility) can accurately set their DSLR's Clock to "Real Time", the "Set PC to Camera Time" request probably loses its value...

But, either way, the whole thing starts with a "Time Comparison"...
