Finally… BackyardNIKON V1 BETA01 is released.

admin

Question

YOUPEE!!!

In this initial BETA release my only goal is camera connectivity, basic image acquisition, and live view.

Please report the following issues ONLY for now.

  1. Camera connection issues
  2. Live view not working issues
  3. Taking picture issues (not BULB unless you have a DSUSB cable which does work in BETA 01).  TV pictures in ‘M’ dial mode are working so please report any issues if taking TV images does not work.
KNOWN ISSUES.

  1. BULB over USB does not work yet, for any models.  BULB will only work if you have a DSUSB cable in this initial BETA 01 release.
  2. NEF images download but will not be displayed.  For this reason I have set the default image setting to RAW+JPG so images can be shown in BackyardNIKON.

The BETA installer comes pre-compiled with a BETA license.  The BETA installer will NOT install over your current BackyardEOS so fear not.

I have personally tested camera connection with…

  • D90
  • D5100
  • D7000
I also expect the following camera to connect properly, but I can’t be sure.

  • D5200
  • D5300
  • D7100
  • D800
All other models I’m not sure… BUT it may connect and if it does you will get a message like the following and liveview will not work, but taking pictures should/might.

Device(#####) Module(Type###) found!

PLEASE CONTACT US with the above information.

We may be able to hook it up properly in BETA 02.

This is exciting, thank you for your support and interest,

Guylain,

I believe your last post requires a further explanation.

It is my understanding according to the list of Nikon cameras expected to work with BackyardNIKON that the D7100 does not require the DSUSB unit or serial cable, that the D7100 bulb mode can be controlled over the USB cable.

Has something changed???

The reason I ask, based on the compatible camera list, I have been considering purchasing a D7100 as it does not require the serial cable and DSUSB unit. I have this with my Nikon D300s and the only reason for buying a D7100 is to get away from needing the DS USB unit...

As I said in my first post in this thread.

BULB over USB is not working for any models in the first BETA release.  It a matter of time... but I did not want to delay the BETA release any further so a serial cable is needed for all models for the time being... until I get a chance to implement it.

Right now I have some major pain points as far as camera connections is concerned and this a where BETA 01 is focused on.

Hope this helps,

Hang in there Mitch... I will get there eventually, sooner rather than later of course :)

Thank you for your time testing :)

Thank you Guylain,

Somehow I had missed the fact that the bulb over USB was not working in the beta version. Thank you for clarifying that.

No problem Mitch.  I good to ask again, stuff easily gets lost in along thread sometimes.

Two different D7000's and both connected and worked great on Windows 7.  No issues on the items you wanted tested so far.  Tested changing shutter speed, aperture and ISO and all worked fine and correctly recorded in EXIF.  Great job so far Guylain!

Windows 8, same cameras and lens as above, same results.  Everything worked very well. Anything else we should test for you?  Maybe update the top post in this thread with what you would like us to test so it doesn't get lost?  Just a suggestion.

Thanks, not for now.  I'm sticking to camera connectivity for BETA 01.  I'm hoping to fix a few more bugs then release BETA 01c and see if more camera connects... and those that already connects... well hoping they still do :)

Thank you for your time.

Hello all,

Just wanted to post that my D5100 is working fine (almost) in BackyardNikon.

I have purchased the DSUSB device and used it successfully with the D5100.

The way I had to configure was as follows:

I attached a USB hub to a USB port on my laptop.

I attached the standard Nikon D5100 cable to the USB hub with the mini usb end connected to the mini usb port on the camera.  This allowed BN to recognize the camera and enabled shutter speeds, delays, ISO, etc.

I attached the DSUSB device to the USB hub, then connected the small end of the supplied DSCBL-15 cable to the 8 pin connector (square port) on the D5100.   This allowed BN to control all the shutter related functions.

So now I have two cables, the Nikon cable that comes with the camera, and the DSUSB cable both connected to the camera.

In testing indoors with BN, I was able to select shutter speeds, ISO, and delays and pauses and acquire some great images of my ceiling.   When first capturing the first image, BN would pause for a few seconds while it identified the DSUSB device, then it would complete the image capture.  This only occurs on the first capture, subsequent captures were normal, no delay.

Images were displayed properly in the main screen and also in the thumbnails.

Unfortunately, I changed the setting for storage from PC and SD card to just SD card before setting up outside for some dark sky testing.

I found that everything worked outside, except that when I set the exposure to 15 seconds to take a test shot, the shutter action completed, but the image would never download and display...<_<   I fussed with it a bit but could not make a test image appear.   Then clouds rolled in and shut me down for the night, it was while moving the kit back inside that it dawned on me that the problem was probably the SD card storage setting?

The next clear night I have I will test it again with the storage set to PC and SD card, like it was set during indoor testing.  I have no doubt it will work fine.

So far, so good.   Oh, I'm using beta 01b with Win7/32 bit on the laptop.

Cheers...Paul

Perfect, this is what I needed to properly register the D600.  Live view should work in BETA 01c later this

week.

Great news! - Thanks Guylain..... I saw something somewhere that said the D600 could support bulb over USB - do you know if this is true yet?

I believe it is... BUT... it is not implemented yet in BETA 01.  All cameras require a DSUSB cable to use bulb with BETA 01 <_>

My focus with BETA 01 is purely camera connectivity.

Hi, just had a quick go with my D7100 and Win7 64bit laptop.

Got a lot of 'camera not found' but eventually got it to connect.

Couldn't get imaging session to work though.

Got it to do a preview once and download the image.

Mostly just timing out trying to download 1st image and then have to reset to clear the problem.

Thanks,  I'll be releasing BETA 01c this weekend with a lot of stability change re: camera connectivity.  It will still have issues with some models but I should be quicker to resolve them once BETA 01c is released.

I now have a D40, D90, D5100, D5300, and D7000 to test with.  I still have some minor issues with the D40 and once this is resolve I will release BETA 01c knowing first hand that at least these 5 models work fine... and if these 5 models work fine + plus those that have reported good success with other models it will start to look pretty good.

On the up side I was able to make bulb over USB work for some models that supports it and I was able to test that with the D5300.  It works beautifully :)

Thank you for all you help, I appreciated.

I'm not a Nikon user, and yet I'm still EXCITED !!

It's GREAT seeing Guylain's Efforts coming to Fruition !!

Hopefully, this Beta Effort will be relatively short and productive...

(And yes, once BinaryRivers has opened up "the Backyard" to Nikon Users, too, that BYEOS v3.1 will then soon be delivered with another batch of Features and Updates for us Canon Users...  You didn't think I was all that generous, did you ??   )

Guylain and Chris,

April 6, wee early hours of the morning, I downloaded backyard Nikon beta 1.0.0 and installed it on my laptop.

I attempted to connect to my Nikon D300S and it failed. I tried a 2nd time with the same results. The camera is connected to the laptop by the USB cable, I am able to go into the camera, look at the memory data, parameters etc. using other software so the cameras connected to the laptop Okay.

However the one thing I did not do, was hook up the DSUSB, would this be necessary? The reason I did not hookup my DSUSB while sitting here on the couch at 1:45 AM and I simply wanted to see if it would connect to theNikon D300S  camera. No error messages were generated, only the message that no camera was found.

Mitch...
