Canon XSI freezes on download

topadge

Question

I have read several other posts similar, but none seem to explain my issue.  First, this is intermittent.  Sometimes i have no issues for a whole evening, other times i never get a single picture in a whole night of trying.

Basically the system seems to work fine as i take preview images.  Once i set up multiple images and start imaging, things appear to go well, but the camera locks up when it should be downloading the image.  If i power cycle the camera, it says it is still busy downloading an image.  Nothing happens and eventually BYEOS disconnects.  The only way out is to pull the battery out and restart the PC.  Sometimes it will work later, other times the problem continues every time i try to start imaging.  I have replaced the usb cable and the battery.  I don't typically have a memory card in the camera because i save straight to the PC.  Do i need one?  Or should i just save to a card instead?  I am very frustrated because i cannot figure out the cause because it is intermittent in nature, but still very frequent.

Please help.  I would like to image tonight, but am tired of staying up all night only to get no images for the effort.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Tony

So I tried the EOS utility and had the same problem.  It only seems to occur while guiding.  I'm not sure if it is something to do with PHD or with my ASI120MC.  I'm going to borrow a different canon dslr to try to rule out the camera.

Could also be the usb cable, change it, it may make a difference :)

What is your camera model?

This looks like a rare but semi-common issue that I have seen once or twice with some camera model where the camera fails to fire the _image_ready_for_download_ event and when this happens BYE is in limbo because it is waiting for the image to download but the camera never notifies BYE that an image _IS_ ready for download.

This is a camera issue (or Canon SDK) and there is not much BYE can do sadly <_>

However, if my theory is right, if you set the SAVE TO field to "Camera Only" it should work.  The downside is that your images will not be downloaded to your computer... but you will be able to complete an imaging session.  It's a compromise for sure and it is far from being ideal... but this is the only solution for this issue <_>

Hope this help,

Guylain

Thanks for the reply.  My camera is a Canon Rebel Xsi, 450D.  I have a question related to the sequence of connecting devices.  I have an ASI120MC for guiding that i connect either before or after the Canon.  Could there be a problem communicating with the Canon based on which device was connected first?

I have a 450D as well, same issue, but I think its fixed.

I am powered over AC and when it freezes and you try to turn the camera off it says its recording an image and never turns off.

I found that if I removed the installed SD card it no longer freezes.  Give that a try!

Guylain-

I setup last night and a similar but slightly different issue.  It seems that BYEos froze and did not tell the camera to stop imaging.  Previously it appeared to be stuck during download, but this time it seems like it did not get that far.  Oddly, this seems to only occur when guiding.  I took a series of darks the night before with only my camera connected and it seemed to work fine.  It imaged until the battery died.  Then last night before starting my imaging i took a series of Flats with no issues.  It took 30 images with no problems so i shutdown to wait for dark.  When i started the imaging later, all the preview images were fine but then it only took one 300s image, then locked up on the next one.

I have tried both ST-4 guiding and ASCOM guiding with the same results so it is not specific to the guiding connection type.  I guide using a ASI120MC.  Is it possible that it is a USB bus issue?  Are there any settings i need to look at for the USB ports on the laptop?  Is there any priority that can or needs to be given?  I am running win7x64.  I have tried both PHD and PHD2 with the same results.  I am running out of things to troubleshoot without buying a new camera.  I attached a few log files because i don't know which one was from when it crashed last.

Thanks

Tony

Hi Tony... is it possible that you laptop went into sleep or hibernate mode during that time?  That would cause issues.

I will look at the log files in the meantime.

I don't think so because i have it set to never sleep.  I am currently running in "best performance" power mode which i believe is an always on mode.  The flat files taken earlier in the night were obviously shorter duration, so could the length of the light frame have an impact?  I think i will try to EOS Utility tonight to see if the same problem exists so i can try to narrow down to hardware or software as the root cause.  Thanks for the help.  This hobby is difficult enough when everything works, but it entirely too frustrating when i can't even take pictures to begin with.

I would try be eliminating cables/hub/etc in your connection from PC to Camera.  Try a single USB cable < 6 feet directly from your computer to camera and work your way up to your current setup... you may find the culprit that way.

I'll keep you posted on the log file.
