D700 bulb & live view

adamland

Question

I have a D700 that I'm using for prime focus astrophotography and would like to be able to transition from an intervalometer to BackyardNikon. With a simple USB connection of course I can only do <=30 sec exposures and no live view. Is it correct that if I get DSUSB and DSCBL-12 that I will be able to use bulb mode and live view? Any other caveats with respect to BYN features with my camera?

I have just releases BYN 1.0.1.

Can you try it and let me know if live view now works with the D700?

If you only have a trial key it will not work with 1.0.1.  If this is the case ping me and I'll issue you another trial key.

Yes, and no.

Yes, with that model you need a DSUSB or compatible cable to control the shutter for bulb exposures ( >30 seconds).

No, you should only need the USB cable for LiveView.

As far as caveats go, you will not be able to use Mirror Lockup with the D700.  That is not a serious drawback however.  Mirror Lockup is not particularly useful if you are doing deep sky prime focus AP.

You should get confirmation of these capabilities by looking at the Camera Support Grid for BYN, in the Store area of this site.  You should also review the System Requirements to compare the minimum system requirements to whatever PC you are going to use.

Interesting, I don't think I was able to get live view working with just a simple USB connection. Not sure if I tried with the official release, I'll try that tonight. I do see that the support matrix indicates it should work, so that's promising!

Regarding mirror lockup, I just set exposure delay which I think raises the mirror and waits 1 second before exposing.

Hey Guylain, so I tried Live View with just a regular USB and in Frame & Focus, the Live View button is greyed out. Planetary and Drift Align are also greyed out. Same situation after upgrading my D700 firmware to A 1.04, B 1.03. I don't have Maximum Sensitivity checked, and the camera is set to single shot, manual, 1" exposure. If I switch the camera manually to Live View and press the shutter release the camera shows  "r 13" and doesn't go into live view.

Ummm... does the D700 have live view?  I mean with just the camera alone?

Yes, I use it all the time directly on the camera to achieve focus. It's a separate mode on the dial where you select Single, Continuous (Low), Continuous (High), Live View, Timer, or Mirror Up.

Then is is most-likely a bug, let me look into it.
