Nikon USB connections

malcol@outlook.com

Question

Hello,
I see in one of your footnotes on BYN the following:
"2* BULB function appears to not be working when a lens is attached to the camera with some units."
I assume this is when the user is connected only via USB.
Does using a Shoestring DSUSB get around this problem?
So it appears that for some Nikon bodies, we will have to get used to needing two cable connection configurations depending on optics used:

1: If you are connected to a simple t-adapter mounted on a scope - USB is fine
2: if you are connected to a photography lens - only the DSUSB will work

is this correct?

thanks!

Malcolm Park

Hi Malcolm,

Yes this sounds correct.

The DSUSB will work when a lens is connected.  You will need however to tell BYN to -force- use the serial cable by going in Settings -> Advance Settings and checking the "Force use serial cable" option.  This will instruct BYN to always use the serial cable for BULB, therefore bypassing the Nikon SDK for that function only.

Hope this helps,

This is great to hear; I'm looking to get into Prime Focus astrophotography so I won't be running any lenses on my camera. Glad to hear just the USB cable will be fine for me. Thanks for posting up!

Well.... according to your other post you have a D5000.  This is an older model and it will not do BULB over USB so you will need a serial cable if you plan to use BULB... otherwise you are fine with the regular camera supplied usb cable.

See camera support grid here.

So, just to be clear.

To get full functionality with BYN and your D5000 you need 2 cables. One for BULB exposures (longer than 30 seconds) and the regular USB cable for everything else (changing imaging settings, LiveView and downloading).  This is true whether you are using a lens or a telescope.
