Canon announces Rebel T6i and T6s

s3igell

Question

Finally, the new Canon Rebels are Announced - T6i and T6s (need to exercise PATIENCE - delivery in mid-April).

Big News for AP Imagers:

24.2MP (up from 18MP) - Pixels are 3.7um instead of 4.3um

ISO stays the Same as T5i (100-12800)

Wireless Remote Control - looks like updates to EOS Utility and SDK allow 802.11b/g/n Connectivity as well as USB2

Articulating Touchscreen rear LCD

And the T6s gets a few Controls that make it look very much like a mini-70D...

Over-Sampling is a Function of Focal Length and Pixel Size, as well as the Average Seeing.

Having Smaller Pixels means that you can have a Shorter Focal Length Scope (think Faster Focal Ratio) and not be as likely to be in an Under-Sampling Condition.

Average Seeing Conditions are mostly a matter of the Local and Regional Environment where one performs their Imaging.

It must be rather Frustrating for those whose Average Seeing is always at the 3-4 arc-second (or higher) level, but I have rather routinely have 0.5-1.0as Seeing Conditions - especially at the Dark Sites which I travel to (it's part of the reason that I commit to that 400 mile round-trip).

To this point, with my modest 800mm Focal Length I am quite regularly in a slight Under-Sampling condition - and at 2:1 Under-Sampling when I use my Widefield 80mm f/6 APO Refractor.

Mega-Pixels isn't the only thing that these New Rebels could be bringing to the AP Imaging User.

The 24.2MP Sensor is obviously New for Canon - not a "tweak" of the "venerable 18MP line" seen in the Rebel line since the T2i.

It has a "Hybrid CMOS AF III" Focal System that is embedded in the Sensor - not of direct use for most AP Imaging but indicative of a new/revamped Sensor design.

Beyond AF features, Canon's new Sensor needs to "Up the Competition" with the Models from Sony and Nikon that are targeting the same audience (and currently seemingly bringing slightly better Dynamic Range and Noise Control than the T5i).

Assuming that Canon has Succeeded at this Competitive Game, we should be the beneficiaries of those Improvements - without needing to Spend for the likes of the 70mkII or 6D.
