Scaling The Ui To Lower Res Screens...

psychobilly

Question

Whats the minimum screen res that you can usefully use BYEOS with....

At the moment I am getting by with and HP Stream 7 run in Windows 8/.1 and it's 1280x800 screen - using a stylus for basic controls and a mini  wireless keyboard and touchpad for when you need to do more complex tasks such as plan creation...

It seems ideal as an ultra portable controller capable of running "real" PC apps like BYEOS :) it's about the same size as a 7DII and grip but a lot thinner and lighter :)

My mate has got Astro Tortilla (solves a small jpeg from the camera in 7s) and Starry Night Pro 7s running on it controlling a Sywatcher mount via EQAscom and EQDIR  and Canon DSLR all through a 3 port OTG hub...

The Wintab TW700 sounds interesting with it's dual ports...

While BYEOS supports lower screen res my question was about usability... For example on the 1280x800 screen with BYEOS in full screen mode you only have one line of the exposure plan visible at time and have to use the scroll bar to move up and down through the plan... you can use the off-line plan editor and get a few more

I am wondering if you can transfer plans easily between different computers... That way I can create them on my 2560x1440 27" Dell and transfer them wirelessly to the minuscule tablet...

All you have to do is go to Settings and set "Force Netbook Resolution" and it will take less room; albeit the histogram control will be hidden but you will have a button to invoke it.

Doing anything to support an even lower resolution means a full UI rewrite and that is not planned :(

Hope this helps,

Thanks that sounds ideal.... I found the work around for the task bar not auto hiding in windows 8.1 and thats given a bit more real estate in the crucial areas... How about copying plans from one machine to another is that a goer?

Looks like I have a few days before any clear skies so just playing with the software at the moment...

Thanks Guy that's a perfect solution...

Getting the taskbar to autohide means I get 3 rows of the plan visible which makes minor tweaks easier. I will have a look at the netbook option but I am happy with the display now :)

I tend to have different plans based on the FL on the lens I am using and the mount that the camera is sitting on...

The 120  exposure two stage plan ran flawlessly tonight :)

You can get these latest Generation Intel processor based Windows 8.1 tablets for a real steal your side of the pond...  I have an additional 32GB SD card installed in mine which I use as the data drive...

It is interesting how much functionality can be "stuffed" into such a small package.

Other than Screen Resolution, how well does it perform AstroPhotography with BYE ??

Are you able to compare experiences to a more traditional Laptop ??

Does the Stream7 run into Memory Issues ??  Other ??

Specs are a bit thin on this Tablet...

The USB port is only USB2 ??  Apparently supports OTG, as you are able to connect to your DSLR...

It'd be interesting to hear a bit more about your experiences running BYE (and maybe PHD2) on this diminutive Tablet...

At the moment it's all been indoors but it seems to run BYEOS very well... I have tried it with My 7DII (USB3.0 Camera connected to USB2.0) and 5DIII (USB2.0) DSLR's via cheap OTG cables and OTG Hubs when I want to connect the wireless trackpad and keyboard at the same time... The hubs allow you to power USB devices from USB "battery" or wallwart... but not charge the tablet at the same time...

Another recent convert has got far more software running on his ... Including the ASCOM platform , Astrotortilla , Cartes Du Ceil.... Teamviewer to remote into it form a laptop.

I haven't gone that far he want's to do far more with it than I do... All I need is 2-3 hours of DSLR Control on an Astrotrac mount...

Anything more I will have mains power and an I5 laptop and NEQ-6...

On the same "note" - no pun intended... I recently picked up one of those <$100 tablets... Wintab TW700.  1280x800 7" screen.
Even though I need glasses to read it and a mini bluetooth keyboard/trackpad to drive it smoothly, I can vouch for it's effectiveness, in that it has two USB ports; one micro USB to charge with and one full size USB3.  If you rig up the right cable, the micro can be used to both charge and be a USB2 host simultaneously.  Once Guylain figured out what I was doing wrong, this has been a very effective solution to use at the scope for PHD2 and image capture via BYE.  I run UltraVNC server on it and keep an eye on things from a warm place.  Plus, the children can use it to do whatever kids do on a Windows 8.1 tablet.

I just put an old 32G micro SD in and capture to that (The ultimate solution to my problem, Guylain).  Not much storage out of the box, but the SD slot adequately fixes that.

I plan to install Astro Tortilla on it to see if it's powerful enough to dive that, but I have to get proficient with AT first on a more capable machine.

One interesting thing to note;  The Wintab has a com port in there somewhere, and it's not a bluetooth shadow port... the device manager shows it to be a genuine RS232 port.  At first I thought it might be the way the touch screen or brightness sensor interfaces with windows, so I disabled it and still had touch control as well as light sensor control.  It would be interesting to know if there is truly the hardware inside to use as a com port with a few wires soldered in the right places.  Maybe one of these days someone will do a series of tear down pictures as these become more popular...
