Images Won't Down Load.

DavidNicolson

Question

I am using the free trial version of Backyard EOS and it has been working perfectly, however in the last few days, although the program appears to work correctly, the images are not being transferred to the computer.  The indicator in the top RHS of the applications indicated "downloading " etc, but no images appear in the folder "BackyardEOS".  This function has worked in the past, is there a limit to the number of downloads in the free trial version?

This is absolutely no limit on functionality of the trial version, it is fully featured premium edition.

In all cases where this was reported in the past was always caused by users changing the download folder and/or lack of permission to copy the files in the destination folder.

Your images are not lost however, they are all in "My Pictures\BackyardTEMP\Downloads\".

Are the images displayed on screen?

Did you change the default download folder location?

Post a print screen on the Setting dialog and please make 100% that your selected download folder does exist.

Wait...am I now to understand that TWO folders of images are being created? My laptop has a hard drive that most would probably call tiny, so I've been emptying the BackyardEOS folder after each session (offloading to a larger drive), but I haven't seen a BackyardTEMP folder. Is it hidden?

No... It's not hidden.  But since you are moving them to another drive after your session anyway, why not specify your Desktop as your default folder for saving your files instead of My Pictures.  That way it will be readily apparant to you where the file is.  You can accomplish this in the setup area.

The BackyardTEMP folder is not hidden, it is in "My Pictures\BackyardTEMP".  Do NOT move that folder on an external drive.  This is not supported and will/may create other issues.  Whatever you do leave it on a local drive.

The BackyardTEMP folder is the immediate recipient of every Image as it is Downloaded via USB from the Camera.  Then, while the next Exposure is underway, the Background Worker Thread of BYE goes to work on the previously Downloaded Image.  It reads the Image File to provide the Image displayed in the Image Center display (if you are set for RAW Capture then this involves Decoding and "Developing" a displayable Image), and to provide the displayed Histogram, and to read the EXIF data for details such as the Camera Sensor Temperature, and to Insert certain EXIF Data, and to perform the File Rename using all this Data, and finally to place it in the Output Directory as per your Settings.  And by this time (depending on the speed of your Laptop), you are already 10-20 seconds into your next Exposure - so that Image Capture Time is Maximized.

BYE looks to have about a GB of Free HDD Space for these Operations - and should post a Warning if it doesn't find that much available (but I don't recall hearing how frequently that is checked).

A full night of capturing 20-25MB CR2 RAW Files (say: 180sec Exposures plus 30sec Dithering for 4 hours = 4x15x25 = 1.5GB of Data Capture) plus the 1GB of available Working Space...  Hopefully you can start each Imaging Session with at least 2.5GB Free Space on even a "tiny HDD"...
