Canon 1000D

FrankyT

Question

Hello I have just downloaded Backyard EOS classic for my Canon 1000D.  I have just started playing with it however it says I cant use the mirror lock function and then a delay as my camera needs a serial cable to operate it???  Is it simply me or does this software not suit my 1000D?

Regards

Franky,

BYE suits your camera just fine.  Look at the BYE product support grid on the BYE Trial Edition purchase page of the site.  It shows that in order to use the mirror lockup function with the 1000D you need to connect a second, specially-designed, serial cable to the external shutter contol jack on the camera.  This is a Canon limitation, not a BYE limitation.

So, you have 2 choices with that camera...don't use the mirror lockup feature or purchase one of the compatible serial cables.

I used a 1000D for astrophotography for 3 years and never needed to use mirror lockup. I now have a T5i that does mirror lockup without the serial cable, but I still have not used it.

I would suggest that you try using the camera without mirror lockup and only pursue purchasing the serial cable if you believe that your images suffer from the effects of shake due to the mirror flipping up.  I have not seen those effects with either my Celestron or AP mounts with the long exposure or planetary imaging that I typically do. The longer your exposures and the sturdier your mount are, the less the effect of any momentary shake due to the mirror flipping up.

I hope this helps.

Rick is 100% correct :)

I will add that mirror lock for long exposure astrophotography is over rated.  Most beginners want to use because they can but in 99% of the cases it is not needed and adds 0 value.

Unless you have a very, very flaky mount turn mirror lock off and never look back.
