All of the Image Filename elements are configured in the Settings / Filename Template Editor (click the ellipsis at end of the Filename Template display in Settings).

Windows allows 260 chars for the full maximum length of a Filename and Path.

Surely there is more to the Path than just the "C:\users" that you list in your Post.  You aren't dropping all Image Files directly in the Users root directory, are you ??  Usually, the expanded Pathname becomes something like "C:\users\John Livermore Home PC\Pictures\BackyardEOS\yyyy-mm-dd\Target\" and then the Filename Template chosen as per above.  (But even so, at 72 chars for the path, this comes nowhere near the 260-char limit.)

(If you are having problems posting a screenshot - perhaps you can simply capture a Full Filename example, and paste the Text in a reply.)

OK, I see that we crossed posts, and you were able to embed two screenshots illustrating your concern.

The illustrated filename, while "large-ish looking" is only 44 chars (file extension is stored separately), so that doesn't explain your "Filename too long" dilemma, even if it does explain your concern of longer than desired filenames.

The Settings entry for Filename Template looks a bit odd to me.  The screenshot with your actual Filename Template Editor open shows that you are apparently manually placing the "Object Name" in one of these fields.  The intended purpose is to have a "<target>_" placeholder, and then to enter your Title in the "Target" field of the Capture Plan portion of the Imaging Session.  Beyond that, the extra Zeros which you seem concerned about are part of the value for "<duration>" (just no separators - you need to add an underscore or dash if you want data element separation).

From reading the rest of your original post, does this mean that you are no longer encountering the "Filename too long" errors ??

Look at your TEMP folder as well.  It is not pointing to any drive?  That will cause issues.

Make sure to select a valid BackyardTEMP folder and make sure it is on a local drive like C:

The BackyardTEMP should never be on a network drive or on a removable hard drive, I depend 100% on its availability.

here are the 3 images above here, showing what BYOS is set at. does this help.

in terms of naming and path...

As suggested earlier, please post an image of the actuall file name template editior.  All those ' | ' back to back in your name structure leads me to believe the issue is in the editor.

Okay, it actually looks good now.  The ' | ' are fine.

Do you still get the file name to long error with the the BackyardTEMP properly set?

Guylain

nope the errors are all gone, but this still leaves me with a mile long name <_<

any ideas to reduce the names lenght either jpg s or AVI  , i will try it!

well i think i will have to live with names that are over 10-20 characters long ,oye.

43 ish in the case of an AVI in planetary mode...

Not really, that is what it boils down to.

Aun = 3 characters

Duration = 3 characters

sequence = 6 characters.

You get 12 characters in total with this config.

You could type in an underscore after the '<duration>' so it reads '<duration>_'.  It would add an extra character but it would separate the duration form the actual sequence number.

I don't know if you caught this element:

Target Name - there is a field exposed in the main Capture Plan which will populate the Filename where you leave "<target>_" as the entry in the Filename Template Editor.

(this means that you don't need to open the Settings dialog in order to change "Targets" - and allows that field to be used in the Directory Name if you so choose)

Clipboard01.jpg

thank you , i will try that, even if it seems to be only in the DSO section of the plan...not the planetary side.

or, perhaps it applies on all plans...  ( i think)
