Slave Camera 2 Image From Camera 1

dts350z

Question

This was discussed in the RC05 thread, I think. Did any such capability make it into 3.1 release?

The idea is the camera 1 instance is controlling PHD2, so camera 2 (mounted on the same mount as camera 1) needs to have it's mirror lock/shutter slaved from the camera 1 instance so you don't get a dither in the middle of camera 2's image. Camera 2's exposure length would need to be <= camera 1's exposure length.

Hope that's clear.

We're talking about 2 separate cables here, right? One serial cable, which has been modified to have two camera ends, and one normal, unmodified, usb cable?

Yes, the split serial cable connects to 2 cameras and the computer... the regular usb cable is connected to your primary camera, just one of the 2 cameras.

The camera with both cables IS your camera connected to BYE.  This other camera with only the serial cable is your slave camera... and images on that slave camera will save to card only... unless you have that slave camera connected to a second instance of BYE... in that case BYE will download images form the second camera as well... but they will not be renamed.  This is a limitation of going the split serial cable route.

Hope all of this makes sense.

Happy New Year!

Getting a Master instance and Slave instance of BYE to follow suite is a MAJOR feature.  This is why I'm recommending the split cable for now if you want to dither.  If not you can already start and connect 2 cameras at the same time with the Premium Edition... but they are separate instances without one knowing the other one is there

My Priorities are...
1) BackyardNIKON
2) Completing Auto-focus

These 2 well take all my time for at least 6 to 10 months... which means I will not (and can  not) entertain any other big feature until 2015 for sure.

BYE is a weekend and weeknight gig for both Chris and I.  I have 3 kids and Chris has 2... time is limited at both ends <_<

Regards,

I think that Guylain has been rather consistent that he intends to address Auto-Focus in a BYE v3.2, and then such a "Major Feature" as "Slaved Cameras" would of necessity be at least v3.3...

Now, I'm probably 1st on the List for any such additional Dual-Camera Feature, being that I'm probably the one who pushed most for Dual Camera / Dual PHD / Dual Anything Features...

But, I'll readily wait for Guylain to have time to address Auto-Focus, first...

OK major feature. Fine.

Can we Brainstorm a little in the meantime?

Could one use an optical slave, like this: http://flashzebra.com/opticalslaves/index.shtml to trigger a 2nd camera shutter (instead of a flash unit)?

Or to trigger the software interface on a 2nd BYEOS instance that is used by Astrotortilla?.

I saw the reference to "split cable" above but searching the forum that seems to be a Nikon thing.

This has been discuss in the past... somewhat.

You can split a serial cable to have 2 camera end connectors and 1 computer/usb end connector... then go to advance settings and check "force serial cable".  This will force BYE to use the serial cable for BULB even if your camera supports BULB over USB and because you have 2 cameras connected to a single serial cable both camera should fire at the same time with a single instance of BYE.  This has been requested by Jerry Lodriguss a while back and he reported it working fine.
