Frame & Focus image shift when using 5x

HSG

Question

When using the frame & focus function the whole image shifts when I switch between 5x mode and standard mode when using my Canon 50D. For example if I centre a star in normal mode and then check under 5x it will be offset, if I recenter it there and go back to normal mode it will be offset in that view. Using a 5D Mark III I don't have this problem at all.

I'm not sure if this is an issue with my 50D, the Canon SDK or BackyardEOS?

This is normal.  The 5X zoom only has about 10 anchor points of several pixels (varies per camera models) and therefore the 5X zoom step size is several pixels, something like 60 pixels on most models if my memory serves my right.  This is typically not the case on higher end models.

I don't have a camera with me at the moment to test but can you zoom with keystrokes or mouse scrollwheel in the main window, like in the preview or image windows, vs. using the 5x function, and would that solve the problem?

It would... somewhat.

In 5x zoom you get a 1:1 pixel ratio and this provides a clearer/crispier image.  Not necessarily necessary for Frame&Focus but a must for planetary imaging.

Hope this helps,
