Planetary Mode

mmetwally

Question

I am unable to get a clear image of Jupiter in planetary mode using a Canon 40D at prime focus. I set the camera to manual and live view simulation on, but then cannot control the ISO exposure from BEOS. I change the shutter speed from Bulb to anything else and the image disappears completely no matter what the ISO is. I put it back to Bulb and the ISO setting doesn't work there wither.

The net result is that i get a bright white disc with absolutely no features. I have no problem controlling the exposure when in imaging mode, this only happens in planetary mode. Help please.

This is because you are still in BULB mode.

Select a TV value < 1 second and you should start to see the image change.

Thank you. I have tried that. Taking the value down from bulb mode makes the image completely dissapear

Yes, you need to set it to a value where you feel you'll get the most detail without over saturating the image :)

This has been discussed several times in this group in the past, but is raised again periodically.

In imaging mode the shutter speed setting determines how long the shutter is open and the ISO acts as a gain for changing the overall brightness of the image.

In Frame & Focus and Planetary modes it works differently.  The camera is collecting and downloading images at a rate of perhaps around 15 frames per second.  Operating this way it is impossible to specify an exposure duration.  How could you collect 15 1-second exposures every second??? Impossible!

So for LiveView, the shutter speed acts as another brightness control.  Changing the shutter speed does not affect the frame rate.  Some cameras have a setting for "Simulate Exposure in LiveView".  If so, it must be enabled in order for the exposure setting to be able to control the frame brightness. With this done, you should see the LiveView frames brighten as the exposure is lengthened from say 1/500th of a second to around 2 seconds.  Getting brighter than 2 seconds will not cause the frame to brighten any more.  Putting the exposure to BULB tells the camera to automatically brighten the frames..For astroimaging you need to control the brightness, so the BULB setting is not useful.

For Jupiter, I would suggest suggest setting the Tv (exposure) to 2" and the ISO to 800.  With the planet in the FOV you should see the overexposed disk.  Then, shorten the exposure until you can clearly see the equatorial bands. Then try imaging.  You might also collect additional image sets with both darker and lighter settings (at shorter and longer exposure values) to see which yield better results when processed.

I hope this helps.

Thanks very much for all these comments. The problem I have is that under shutte speed I only have 4 options Bulb,1-640, 1-750 ish and 1-800 all the options other than bulb are well under a second. There is no 2 second option. I noticed that if I turn on live view in the camera at the same time then I can change the shutter speed to seconds rather than fractions of a second but only manually from the camera and not from EOS.

Really?  That should not be.

Are you sure your camera dial is set to "M"?

If you still have issues try setting the dial to "TV" when in planetary.

Keep us posted.

Try this.

1) Close BYE and disconnect the camera

2) Set the camera dial to M

3) Go to "My Pictures\BackyardTEMP\" folder and delete the \cache\ folder.

4) Start BYE and connect the camera

5) Go to planetary

6) do you still have only a few values?

Keep us posted,

I am definitely on M mode also tried TV mode. Nothing works. I only get bulb and the three others very short exposures. The only way I can get the full range of shutter speeds is if I change it from the camera dial while in imaging mode then switch to planetary mode. Not sure what else to do.

Did you delete the cache folder (see my previous message).
