Session canceled

Luca

Question

Hello,

I'm experiencing some issues with using BYN with my Nikon D800. I'll try to summarize what happened and what I already did in order to troubleshoot.

- My Nikon D800 worked very well with BYN until a couple of weeks ago. The connection was done as "Nikon 2015" (old firmware) and everything was stable and sound.

- For some reasons that I cannot understand, recently when I start a session the camera shoots just once and then the session is canceled because of some kind of error which I paste here below (I've attached the full log):

21:17:55  BackyardNIKON 2.0.11 Premium Edition
21:19:01  Attempting to connect camera...
21:19:01  Nikon2015/D800 drivers initialized.
21:19:03  D800 CONNECTED!
21:19:09  Imaging session started.
21:19:14  Imaging session cancelled
21:19:14  [kNkMAIDResult_ValueOutOfBounds] (kNkMAIDCommand_CapStart, 33560, kNkMAIDDataType_GenericPtr, 277996656)
21:19:15  Imaging session cancelled
21:19:24  IMAGE_20200701-21h19m24s269ms.JPG
21:19:28  IMAGE_20200701-21h19m28s579ms.NEF
21:19:53  Requested Clipboard operation did not succeed.
21:19:53  Copy to clipboard

Regardless of the length of the session, the camera stops after the first one. A couple of times, though, it went through 5 or 6 shots and the it stopped. Unclear why.

I've been browsing into this forum for few days and I've tried some solutions which I've found here. Here's what I did:

- I've deleted and installed BYN in a new folder. No change.

- I've updated the camera firmware from 1.09 to 1.11. No change (so I've restored back the 1.09).

- I've connected the camera directly to the PC. No change.

- I've removed the lens and installed a different one. No change.

- I've tried to save to SD instead of PC, or to SD/PC together. No change.

- I've downloaded the SDK from Nikon and tried them by following the instructions found in this forum. No change.

- I've restored the Nikon's setup back to factory. No change.

Very likely I did something else which I cannot remember now..

What struggles me is that it stopped working all of a sudden. I would assume that the cable is the culprit, but the camera and BYN connect to each other quite well and the issue happens only when a session starts, so I guess it is not the cable?

Does somebody has any suggestion about how to continue this troubleshooting? Thanks, Luca

Hi, thanks for the feedback.

Looks like I don't know how to quote, so I copy and paste your troubleshooting here and I add my answers as underlined text:

  1. RAW image only (instead of RAW+JPG) done, no change
  2. You have a lens, try without it. it works! I actually tried the same in the past and I remember that when I did it the camera didn't connect, so unsure why now it works. However, when the lens is connected back it doesn't work anymore. I guess I need to replace the lens with another one, uh?
  3. Camera factory reset skipped.

If  needed, please find attached the log.

Thanks, Luca

The error is thrown by the SDK when the CapStart command is sent.  This is probably due to a conflicting in-camera setting.

Things to try

  1. RAW image only (instead of RAW+JPG)
  2. You have a lens, try without it.
  3. Camera factory reset

Keep posted.

By the way, I've tried more lenses and they all work.

Long story short: the problem was the lens I was using recently (Nikkor 50mm f/1.8) which has limited automation. I've to say that during my troubleshooting I swapped back to the previous lens which worked well (Sigma 180mm f/2.8), and I found out that it didn't work anymore, but I guess that the problem was that the D800 firmware was updated to 1.11 at the time of my test. Now I'm back to 1.09, I've installed the Sigma back again and it works well. Clear as mud?

Thank you BackYard Team for your help,

Luca
