D5000 and Bulb Mode

Johnnyaardvark

Question

Hi All,

New to this forum and BYN (OR BYE although had heard of it)

Great that your having a go at supporting Nikon with this software and from what I read generally about camera control elsewhere bulb mode control on Nikons has been a a bit of an issue.

Anyhow, my question and apologies as it's probably been asked before. Can I control bulb mode on my D5000 using this software? Many features seem to be working fine but get this message when trying to control any exposure in bulb mode. (even below 30s)

Your camera requires a configured serial cable for BULB or Mirror Lock

Thanks in advance,

Steve

Numerous Nikons and a few Canons require a Serial Shutter Cable in order to fire off Bulb Exposures - the D5000 is one of those.

The design of these various models is made by the Manufacturers, and not the AP Imaging Software Developers.

If it is any consolation, SGP  to work with the same constraints and neither Nebulosity nor APT even support Nikon DSLRs.

Thanks. Can certainly see that there are some features that are still quite useful even without the full bulb mode support for my camera. I am impressed by the look and feel of the software.

Are you (or is anyone) aware of any Serial Shutter Cable  that are USB driven and work with BYN?

I am, I guess, considering buying an astromodded Canon at some point so may just bite the bullet but could do without the expense straight away so will look at my options for now.

Thanks again

Steve

Steve,

Check the topics in the BYN topic in this forum.  There is a guy, also named Steve, who makes a USB shutter cable to enable bulb exposures for some models of Nikon cameras.  I would look through the old messages in that thread to find out which cameras are supported and what some of the users have to say.

Of course, if your camera can use it you won't need to worry about BYN compatibility.

Hello

I just now tested BYN with my Nikon D5000 and DSUSB cable from shoestring, It works perfectly!

I can do long exposures and also live view works when focusing.

I also connected my homemade SGL arduino focuser and i can controll it but dont think there is an auto focus option in BYN

Can´t wait to test it fully under the stars (cloudy atm)

Good luck!

Thank you Rick,

Didn't have to look too far. I have pm'd Steve.

Wonder if other features still work when using this method? Do you still get liveview for checking focus etc? Probably asking too much! I will be interested in Steve's reply!

Thanks again

S

Yes, other features work. When using the framing / focusing module, you get a live view of the display. That's the only mode you get live view in, and really, the only one where it's useful. The focusing tool is really fantastic. I've never had such an easy time getting perfect focus before. Even if this was the only function BYN performed, it would be worth it for that alone.

Check out the Planetary Imaging Mode - that's done via LiveView, too!!

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know that. But then again, I haven't tried any planetary imaging with BYN as of yet. Usually I use my NexImage 5 for that. Although I'm seriously tempted to get a 2" visual back + barlow so I can use my DSLR for planetary imaging.
