Images Plus is FREE!

astroman133

Question

My friend, Mike Unsold, is the author of ImagesPlus. He recently decided to stop enhancements and updates to ImagesPlus and offer the software at no cost.

I doubt that Mike plans any new updates, so the software is available on an as-is basis.

If you are looking for image processing software, you should check it out at the Images Plus web site.

Well, not sure how I feel about this.

On one hand I think it is awesome for the community that Mike is offering it for free :)

On the other hand I find it sad that another major contributor to the astro-community software has run his course :(

In any case, two thumbs up for Mike.

Yes, it is sad to see any shrinkage in an already small field.  While I rarely used ImagesPlus (I have my hands full climbing the PixInsight Learning Curve), I always appreciated that it was there as a viable alternative.

Perhaps at some time in the near future, Mike Unsold will consider releasing ImagesPlus as OpenSource.  A similar transition occurred with Deep Sky Stacker last year, and DSS is enjoying a happy and healthy progression of support and feature releases.  Same thing happened to PHD2 a few years prior - to Great Success.

Images Plus is free, so the price is right. However, it has a pretty steep learning curve and it is unlikely to change as the author has "retired". Fortunately the web site has lots of tutorials to help. The author is a friend and I used to use it, but I switched away some time ago to use CCDStack and Photoshop. PixInsight is also a popular alternative so you can get lots of support. There are some regional workshops and online tutorials for sale.
