Nikon D90, Windows XP SP3 on Parallels, BYN 02f not connecting (other camera control apps working)

deadwing

Question

Hi,

I'm trying to use BYN (latest beta 02f) with my Nikon D90, using Windows XP3 on Parallels, a clear system I use without problems with EQMOD/Astrotortilla/Cart Du Ciel/DigiCamControl to do Astrophotography.

I downloaded latest beta of BYN because I received today the USB handmade cable to try remote shutter control via BYN.

I'm trying to connect my camera to BYN but without success: no card inside, connected via legacy USB cable directly to a USB port, followed all instructions step by step also in the order of turning on devices and connecting cables. Works flawlessy with DigiCamControl and Nikon Control Pro, but BYN just cannot see it. Any suggestion? It seems from other forum posts that it should work quite easily...

Hi Rick,

thanks for your reply. Yes Device Manager sees the camera, as well as the serial com for the remote shutter (even if not important at this stage). As I wrote in the OP I use this Parallels for every session of astrophotography, and while BYN does not see the camera, DigiCamControl (another software to control Nikon cameras) can see and operate it without problems.

Seems more a problem of the Nikon drivers in BYN. I was trying to look into BYN logs but there's no log with details about the connection tries with the camera. Anyone with similar experience where camera is perfectly recognised by the system, works with other tethered camera softwares but not with BYN?

DigiCam Control uses PTP to communicate with the Camera, I use the Nikon SDK.  So they are not use the same communication method.  When I decided to use the Nikon SDK 2 years ago when I started BackyardNIKON I made that decision thinking it would be more stable since it was the official Nikon SDK... and with all the communication issue I'm not sure this was the best decision... but it is too late to go back now.

If you reboot your computer (I know it is harsh) does it connect?

Regards,

Hi,

thanks for your reply, I tried rebooting both the virtual machine and the Mac itself, no change.

As I'm a developer as well, do I have any log (or any way to enable it) to have details about the communication between BYN and the camera to check and send to you to understand where's the problem?

I understand about the protocol differences and why would be difficult now to change, but maybe generating some detailed debug logs I can help trying to understand where is the issue? Might well be something simple...?

I have no idea what else to try...considering I spent $60 for the usb/dslr shutter cable that works basically only with BYN I'd like to try any possible solution :)

Hi,

thanks for giving me the logs path, I'll paste them below (BYN opened, camera switched on, tried to connect twice, no camera found, closed BYN).

I suppose the error is this one:

Thanks for the log file.

This error is thrown from the Nikon SDK which means the SDK does not see the camera therefor BYN can't see it either and catches and re-throw the error <_>

I do no know why the SDK is so finiky when connecting <_>

Is there anything different in your setup from the time it worked and now?

Hi,

It never worked with BYN, it works only woth digicamcontrol (but sadly it seems the serial usb shutter release does not work there!).

It seems indeed the connection through sdk does not work...do you have a way to compile a debug version giving out all connection details?

Something I already tried twice, uninstalling and reinstalling them, no solution here because the problems are not the drivers (the camera works perfectly with other apps) but with the Nikon SDK, that's used by BYN it seems to communicate (and so connect) with the camera.

It seems many have this problem with Nikon, sadly they're not making life easier, but apart from changing the way BYN works (not via SDK) the only way would be to have a detailed log of the connection phase, to understand where and so possibly why it does not work.

But for that only the dev can do something :) I can just be available to run a debug version with my setup and possibly help to solve this with my setup and hopefully others.

I would try re-installing your Nikon Camera driver, it worked for my D5200

Hi,

sadly I cannot try because I have no pc only macs, and in all honesty all the other software I use (eqmod, cart du ciel, phd, astrotortilla, nebulosity) works perfectly in this specifically configured instance of XP SP3 dedicated only to astrophotography, and being a VM offers superior stability and speed (is on a top spec 15inch macbook retina with SSD and 16gb of RAM, virtual machine configured to the best possible specs supported by XP 32bit).

I posted a message on Digicamcontrol forum about the not working usb serial cable with their software, the dev asked for logs and pointed me to latest version where actually (yeah!!) everything works.

In Digicamcontrol my camera works (via PTP) and the serial usb shutter cable as well works, and there's (I did not know) a specific Astro section that connects with PHD and allows planning sessions and dithering, with also some more advanced scripting if needed.

Sadly it does not offer yet integration with Astrotortilla and is not dedicated only to AP like BYN, I'd love to use BYN but for this these connection problems should be solved.

I'm available to run a debug version of BYN and check in detail with the dev what's not working in the connection phase. In the meantime it seems I'll use Digicamcontrol to do automatic AP with PHD dithering...waiting to use BYN :)

To make the test even more real, I tried now the Digicamcontrol + usb remote shutter cable from Steve, all on the field (in my backyard!) for real.

That means running one single 12m USB cable from the USB3 port of my Mac to the mount, where there's an unpowered USB3 hub (it takes power from my Mac), and attached to the hub there are Orion Autoshooter guide camera, usb serial connection to my EQ5, my Nikon usb cable for camera images, and the Steve's usb serial shutter release cable. All of these taking power from the 12m USB cable to my single USB3 port and my XP3 Virtual Machine.

Many would say is extreme but works perfectly every night (I'm an IT engineer and I bought all quality stuff), and even now with the usb serial shutter release cable and Digicamcontrol all works without problems.

Obviously the tests on BYN WERE NOT performed in that scenario, but inside my house and with the two cables to my Nikon running each one directly from the two usb ports of my Mac to avoid any problem, and the camera cable was also the original one (I tried also with the one I use with my mount, same result BYN cannot find my camera).

Hopefully soon I'll start using BYN with this setup :)

On Mac I use Smart Shooter and Sofortbild, on Windows only BYN, DigiC and Nikon Control.

Never tried SGP because I don't like it and I heard is not good with Nikons (often cannt recognise camera), maybe it uses SDK as well (that is famous sadly for not being well mantained or supported by Nikon).

SGP uses the Nikon SDK just like BYN.

I would be interested to see if SGP connects.  If should not but if it does it means I'm doing something wrong connecting to the camera, it is unlikely because there is only one command to connect, but it possible if a setting of some sort must be sent to the camera before attempting a connection.

In any case, if you try SGP let me know if it connects or not.

Hi there,

I tried and I can say it does not work as well, and together with BYN is the second (and only, on Windows or Mac) program that does find my camera and does not connect with it. Possibly all the others are using PTP or as you say different commands or ways to work with the sdk?

No error produced, no detailed logs...so I have no idea again about details of the connection failure reasons.

Yuk, I'm starting to doubt my decision to use the Nikon SDK.   But it's too late now... unless I invest another 12 months (nights and weekend) to rewrite the camera interface to send PTP commands instead <_>

I can't help with the decision or rewriting..I know for sure that Nikon SDK were always a huge problem because not well supported (on purpose) from Nikon itself.

If there's a way to produce a detailed low level log of all the steps involved with connection then maybe would be easier to find the problem.

None of them..camera model is supported, it works with other softwares on windows (and on mac), parallels is never a problem because it's a direct connection to the devices, and all my devices work in parallels.

Problem is the Nikon SDK used by BYN and SGP, in general sadly is known that Nikon never paid too much attention to the sdk and preferred for devs to use PTP (I suppose because they control it better and requires less maintenance?).

Digicamcontrol (and Sofortbild and Smart Shoot) they all use PTP and work, luckily in the meantime Digicamcontrol is able to work with PHD and usb shutter cable and has asteophotography functions so it does what I need. But BYN is an AP dedicated one and I'd rather use it :)

As I said if there's a way to precisely log all the steps involved in recognition (where the problem seems to be) and connection I could use my not working configuration to test it more.

To the dev: maybe you can just isolate the module responsible for connection and log out a console like system so that I can precisely tell you what happens and try this way to help solving the problem for me and the others having connection issues? :)

No, my questions are more like this...Has anyone been able to use BYN with your model of camera?  Is anyone currently using BYN on a Mac with Parallels?  Did they have to do anything special to get it to work?

If anyone else has gotten your model of camera working with BYN on a Mac with Parallels, then it seems like there is nothing inherently wrong with the software.

Getting answers to questions like that will narrow down what works and what doesn't and may help figure out what is different with your installation.

Guylain has indicated that there is a single call to the Nikon SDK that does the connect and that call is failing.  I don't know what information could be gained from debugging or adding additional logging since the code that is failing is not changeable.

Hi Julian,

I specified since the start of the topic (and as well in the topic) my full configuration to make it easy to search: Nikon D90 :)

Replying to the question about the SDK being 'just a single call', would be enough to have a debug rich version of the app printing out all registries, global and local variables, catching the error (as you know better than me!) and do some more depth debugging to understand where/what fails and why.

Is obviously something about the SDK or something like that, but maybe there's a way to go around it without changing to PTP where it works in basically every case.

As I said if you have a way (it's not opensource so I cannot do it myself) to make a debug version to have full logs around the identification and connection then maybe we could solve the problem. Otherwise there are alternatives, but would be nice to have BYN out of beta like the others and working with most cameras smoothly even if using the Nikon SDK :)

Hi Guylain,

I'm not sure about the VM problem instead of something else, but probably that could be easily tested with a simple app using the Nikon SDK and trying to probe and connect.

The Parallels VM is 100% USB compliant, so unless Nikon SDK expects something not standard it should not be a problem, but evidently there's something that blocks it and does not block the PTP.

Unless there's something else...what would be the way to test more about it?

I have a feeling it is more of a camera setting, where the SDK only sees the camera under certain settings.

Remove the CARD and see if it connects.  If yo have several images on your card this will make a difference.  That could be it.

Hi,

yes I always have my camera ready for AP and so without any card inside. I also tried with an empty card and with a card with just a few photos, no change...

How is the sdk probing for cameras connected? Would be useful to know if it looks for hardware addresses, strings, how, just to investigate a bit more. From the kinda high level log I sent you it seems some string/parameter is missing, but could be as well just the empty pointer after failed connection.

There's no setting on the camera allowing me to specify if I want PTP or USB.

I'll try later checking if I'm on latest firmware, and if not I'll try updating it if it does not delete all my settings.

The SDK is a black box, I do not have access to its code so I can not answer your question directly <_>

The SDK fires an event when it sees a camera and that is what BYN has to work with.  In your case the SDK does fire the event.
