Does the trial start when the software is downloaded or when it is installed?

Neither. It starts from the time that the Trial license is issued. You need to go to the Store portion of the web site and "purchase" a free Trial license. Once issued, the license key is available for you to Copy to the Windows clipboard and Paste into the BYE/BYN license validation dialog, along with your identifier (the username that you used to get the license).
