ERROR: D5300 in bulb mode

andy-w-h

Question

Hi,

Whenever I try to use my D5300 with bulb mode , whatever the exposure time, I get the following with BETA 02e:

21:22:52  Licensed to BETA Tester (support@binaryrivers.com)
21:23:00  Nikon drivers initialized.
21:25:55  Attempting to connect camera...
..
21:29:42  Attempting to connect camera...
21:29:43  D5300 CONNECTED!
....
21:31:48  Imaging session started.
21:31:57  Imaging session cancelled
21:31:57  [kNkMAIDResult_ValueOutOfBounds] (kNkMAIDCommand_CapStart, 33560, kNkMAIDDataType_GenericPtr, 473231204)
21:31:58  Imaging session cancelled
21:32:05  IMAGE_20140914-21h32m03s128ms.NEF

What am I doing wrong?

It works if I say set the time shutter to 30 (or 25 etc) rather than BULB

rgds

Andy

edit:  this is a copy of the logs in the temp area

Hello,

I'm trying Backyard Nikon 1.0.5 with Nikon D5300 firware C:1.01 L:2.013

I had exactly the same issue when using 14bits. Changing to 12bits resolves it.

Is there way to use 14bits?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

The camera is set to "M" if that is what you mean?

Strangely, the first image is taken correctly, it's just that the camera won't repeat and take the number of exposures specified.

Andy

Is mirror lock set to ON on your camera?  If yes turn it off.

Resolved it.  I found it did work properly if I took .jpg files but not .nef.

I had set the Shooting Menu/NEF (RAW) recording to be 14bit ... once I set it back to 12 bit it worked.

Obvious really!  ;)

Is it possible to query the camera what RAW bit depth it is in and warn or error if not 12 bit?

Ummm... odd!  I'll run a few tests here but the bit depth should not prevent an image to be taken.  If yes I may be missing something for sure.  I'll see if I can fix that for sure.

Thanks for reporting back, it now gives me something to look into.

No problem .. completely repeatable on my camera at least.  Set 14 bit , run BYN, fail.  Exit program, turn camera off then on, set 12 bit and run BYN, success.

I tested using another program found on sourceforge beginning with "digi" ;) and exactly the same results. Not ;) that I ever doubted your coding but wanted to see if it had problems with bulb mode too - this was before I found the 14/12 bit issue.

EDIT: FWIW with 14 bit, both programs cause the camera to seemingly crash.  The "other program" gives Device Busy and Access Denied errors after the first image.

Steve,

With a theoretical 480 Mbps and a realistic 300 Mbps .. it's hard to imagine that USB2.0 isn't up to this task ?

Bulb over usb is not an issue for the models that do supports it, it is a command sent like any other.  The issue is why does the Nikon SDK acting differently.  If it is a limitation I need to find a way to make it fool proof, and if it is not a limitation I need to find out how to make it work.

Thanks.

Hello,

I have the same problem here, any news?

Thanks

This is not BYN issue so I can't help but saying you have the same problem on a old thread does not help to solve your issue.

Please be more specific, maybe it is not the same issue.

Regards,
