Canon 100D - SL1

Fgbarrancos

Question

Now I'm using a Canon 100D - SL1 mod by Hap Griffin from Unmod 1100D.

Now I have to setup BULB and RAW in the camera before connect to BIOS and if I try to mod to RAW without disconnect and connect BIOS again some times it change to RAW+Jpeg.

If I do not change to Bulb the camera do no accept this command from BIOS.

I do not had this type of issues using 1100D.

Sorry about my poor English I hope you understood.

What is not OK when you change to BULB?

Guylain,

First he is using RC04, so he should probably install and try RC05.

From just the screenshot(s) I cannot tell if a Bulb exposure was taken or not, but if it was taken it does not appear to have been displayed, since the displayed image is from the previous 2" Tv exposure.

Hi Rick,

The image has not been taken because there is no evidence of that in the message center, the bulb session was never started, user did not press 'start capture'.

I think the issue is that the OP thinks the camera information center should display bulb instantly when he edits the session plan... and it won't until he presses 'start capture'.  This is a wild guess until the OP is more clear as to what this issue really is <_>

Thanks again,

Send me the log file, they should tell me more.

The log files are in "My Pictures\BackyardTEMP\logs".

Send them to support@binaryrivers.com

I take two pictures with 1"  two with 2" and the last 3 with BULB.

I'm using Byeos 3.0.3 now.

So it works with 3.0.3 but not 3.1 RC4?

I'm a little bit confused, sorry.

If it works with 3.0.3 and not with 3.1 I need the 3.1 log files, not 3.0.3.

Thank you for your patience.

Okay, thanks.

I see what you mean now, sorry it took a long time <_>

Can you try without a lens.  I want to see if the lens plays a role in all of this.

If you go in Frame & Focus and change from BULB to TV to BULB, does the camera information center changes as well?

In Frame and focus the same occurs.  Only accept BULB if I change it in the camera.

The only difference is in Imaging mode I can select BULB in the screen but the software do not accept it and in Frame & Focus I can't select BULB.

Oh, this is very odd.

It almost look to me like the BULB feature is made non available.  I have never seen this before.

TO ANYONE WHO HAS A 100D/SL1... do you see the same behavior?  If yes (or no) I would like your input.  I'm puzzled by this behavior <_>

Thanks

Hello,

First of all, thank you Guylain for the excellent software!

I've been using the Canon T2i, then 70D with BYE, not much issue at all with the basic operations.

I've just brought a SL1 and have it modded. I have started using version 3.1.3 too. I noticed after each and every 120 seconds exposure the computer and camera were "busy" for almost 2 minutes before "downloading." I don't recall this problem when I was using T2i and 70D with 3.0.0 and 3.1.1. (same cable, same computer) This had almost doubled the time it normally took. Is there anything I can do to help your diagnosis?

Thank you kindly!

Look in the Camera's Menus and DISABLE the "LENR" (Long Exposure Noise Reduction).

This is a Canon "Feature" which takes an In-Camera Dark immediately after each Exposure and then performs an In-Camera Subtraction.

Most of us AP Imagers (BYE/BYN/other) really DON'T want the Camera to do this Calibration Process.  We want to do it later during our own Calibration and Stacking efforts...

Thanks! Indeed I have, LENR was set to "auto", now I have disabled it. However, so does my 70D. Maybe the chip is faster in 70D?? I shall retry this week sometime and let you know if that helps! Thank you very much!

Btw, I am just wondering do the Canon DSLRs apply the LENR process to RAW files too? In BYE I always only save files in RAW format instead of RAW+JPG. Regardless, hope the trick works! Thanks again!

Yes, long exposure noise reduction (individual dark frames) are applied to all images (RAW and JPG).

BYE is tolerant of having LENR turned on, but it cuts your productivity in half because every image takes twice as long to expose and download. Your are better to shoot darks at the end of the session or use a master dark library frame that was previously taken.

Congrats on your Hap Griffin modded-SL1!!

The need to set a DSLR to Bulb-mode or not is a design choice made by Canon, not an issue with either BYEOS or the Camera - some cameras have a discrete "B"ulb mode while others only have  "M"anual mode.

As for the manual change to RAW output, that may be a bit of a Bug - Guylain will advise on that - but most of us do not make Camera Menu Selections while the DSLR is connected to BYEOS.  Rather we either set the Camera Menus before hooking it up, or else address our settings via BYEOS.

Enjoy your modded-SL1, and Clear Skies!!

Thanks! Indeed I have, LENR was set to "auto", now I have disabled it.

Canon started to "Promote" the LENR Feature in the past few Generations of their DSLRs, in part acknowledging the Popularity of Nighttime Sky Shots and in part to better compete with the Low-Light Noise Performance of the recent Sony Sensors used in Sony and Nikon DSLRs.

However, so does my 70D. Maybe the chip is faster in 70D?? I shall retry this week sometime and let you know if that helps!

LENR has nothing to do with the "Speed of the Chip", rather solely with an Equal Timed Dark to complete each Light Exposure duration.  (120s is still 120s)  The LENR=Auto setting means that it WON'T perform a LENR for Exposures Shorter than 2 Seconds and unless in Bulb Mode.

Yes, it is applied to RAW files as well.

I've tested it indoor tonight, LENR was indeed the culprit! Thank you so much for all your help, explanations and suggestions! I will disable HINR too. I guess I have not taken too much exposures longer or equal to 120s before, therefore it wasn't as noticeable; now with LP filter, better mount, shorter FL telescope and auto guiding I can start imaging much longer frames... Thanks again!
