Licence fault error

ben.hollands

Question

Hello, I installed the 30 day trial a few days ago and It’s been working perfect until today. I went to login this morning and I’m getting this message on screen...

(s:INACTIVE) - The key provided has expired, been deactivated, or has not been activated. Please contact us.

Like I said, everything has been working fine up until now and I only downloaded the software 5 days ago

kind regards

Ben

Hello and thank you for your suggestion. Internet connection is working as normal.

However, when I click out from the (Inactive) message, I’m taken back to the login screen which shows the 30 digit licence key / identifier.

My 30 digit licence key is already showing but I’m asked to type in my identifier / username. After typing in my username in the correct lowercase I’m taken back to the (Inactive) message.

Hi Ben,

Trial keys also have a maximum of 5 activations.  I see from the server logs that you have exceeded this and this is why the license has faulted.

However, I also see that these activations also happened more or less back to back.  It's difficult to say what happened and the log files purposely do not log much on key activation so that won'y help either.

When it worked initially did you have to re-validate your each time you started BYE?

I'll give you another 30-day trial key but first we need to figure out what caused this to make sure it won't happen again.

Hello Admin

Last night I was playing around with the planetary feature were you see live feed on screen from a dslr. I was using a brand new 10 meter usb / mini b cable.  The cable was still coiled up from postage.

For some reason, every time I clicked on planetary, BY EOS would crash. After 5/6 attempts of crashing, I went and used the original Canon cable and everything worked fine.

This morning I spoke to a friend who suggested unravelling the 10m cable so there wouldn’t be any interference from the coiled cable, this worked well, BY EOS didn’t crash once. Roughly 1/2 hour later i clicked on the BY EOS shortcut as normal and that’s when the message appeared.

I’ve never had to re-validate, the only time I’ve entered my licence key and username was on the initial startup, Sunday.

Thank you very much for replying and for the extended trial, I intend to purchase the premium software once I’ve ironed out the teething problems.

Kind regards

Ben

Well, that could be the issue.  The maximum length for a USB2 cable is 15 feet.  10M is 30 feet.

Unless your 10m cable is an Active Repeater cable this will never work.  The Canon SDK is very sensitive to data loss and if the communication is lost/interupted, even for 1 milliseconds, the camera will disconnect of freeze.... this is because it is still waiting for data to be transfered over USB but it never gets there.

Is your 10M cable an active repeater cable and is it USB2 or USB3?

---

I have canceled your first trial, go ahead and add it again in your cart for a second 30-day trial.

To prevent similar issue with the 2nd trial

  1. re-install BYE in a separate folder
  2. Once you have activated it please let me know and I will remove the maximum 5 activation on your new trial key.

Regards,

I couldn’t tell you if it’s Active or not, sorry. However it is USB 2.  See link below.

I did purchase today a 5 meter active repeater, male to female USB 2 which will arrive tomorrow. I plan on using this with my official canon cable.

I will uninstall and reinstall tomorrow when the new cable arrives and let you know after I’ve activated.

Thank you for being so helpful, I’m 99.99% certain it’s the 10m usb cable as you mentioned, which is the problem.

Kind regards

That is not at active cable... sorry to say but it is crap... simply because it is well over the maximum length of a usb2 protocol cable.

The 5M active repeater cable should work better.

Ben,

It should not be necessary to uninstall and re-install BYE just to replace a cable. Keep in mind that the authors limit how many times a license can be registered. I assume the reason is to prevent unscrupulous people from sharing their license key with friends. If uninstalling and re-installing BYE causes re-registration then definitely do not uninstall and re-install it for no good reason. I would suggest replacing the cable and try your existing installation of BYE. If it fails to connect or operate correctly then post your symptoms back with this group for advice.  The only reason to re-install is if your current software is broken or the installation was incomplete or corrupted. If a new version of BYE is released, you can choose to install it over the old version, without uninstalling the old version, or you could choose to install it in parallel to test the new version while keeping the old version as a fallback.

Out of curiosity, on both occasions downloading BY EOS, I have two shortcuts to BY EOS?  plus the short cut for red screen.

1) BY EOS

2 BY EOS (Camera 2)

The only difference I can see is when using the second shortcut, you get two copies of the same picture in my photos.

Kind regards

I've adjusted your new key on the server as discussed to be on the safe side still.

Hi Admin, can’t remember if 5 meters is the maximum length for a usb cable to allow the software to work? My problem is that I’ve just  built a observatory and the distance from my laptop ( warm room) to my telescope in the observatory is more like 12 meters. Can I connect a 7m and 5m usb cable together??

Kind regards

You should be able to exceed the 5 meter max length limit if one of the cables is an active extension cable and neither of the cables are more than 5m in length. That is the purpose of the active extension cable.

Thank you Astroman133

Excuse my ignorance, so I can connect two 5m repeaters and one 2m usb cable to make up my 12m distance?

Kind regards

Yes, that should work, though my preference would be one 10m active repeated cable instead of two 5m cables.

You will also want to use a Powered Hub at the PC-end of this Active Cable (especially if PC is a Laptop - most are rather short on USB Power).

If you are also connecting to the Mount and/or the AutoGuider via USB, move the Powered Hub to the Mount-end of this configuration (in order to fully power the AutoGuider Camera).

If the AutoGuider Camera is a ZWO, you will need to remember to "Throttle USB Throughput to 40-50%" in that Camera's Control Settings (they are notorious for running "full speed" without buffering for other USB Traffic).  Else you should run a 2nd Active Cable all the way back to the Laptop (which necessitates a 2nd USB Hub - or other Guide Camera powering arrangement).

Yes, it gets more complicated once you start to look to "Remote" your Imaging Rig...
