Upgrading to New Version -stuck on trial license

orionphile

Question

I got directions to upgrade to ver 3.17 from 3.0.  Made the purchase etc with a zero balance shopping cart and a license # but when I attempted to download the program, all I got back was the trial version - it was resident on this new PC already since I had recently downloaded it while I resolved the upgrade issue.  Do I have to delete the trial version in order to legally download the "paid-for" new version?

Frank,

When you download a version of BYE from the O'Telescope web site (BYE 3.1.17 is a the most recent version) it does not have any license applied to it. The first time you launch the program, after a new installation, you need to apply a license (Trial, Classic, or Premium) to activate the features that are available for that license. The Trial license is good for 30 days after activation. If you decide that you want to purchase a license (Classic or Premium) you do not need to download or install the software a second time. All you need to do is apply your purchased license to the software that you already have installed. If you purchase and apply a Classic license, then some of the features will disappear. If you purchase and apply a Premium license you should see no differences in behavior or features, as compared with the Trial license, except that you no longer need an internet connection when starting the program.

So, because any current purchased license can be applied to any version of BYE 3.1.x, there really is no such thing as a "Trial version".

The process of getting a Trial license takes you to the Store and after completing a $0 purchase you should see a Trial license listed in the My Purchases area of your profile on this site. You should be able to look at your purchases and see both the Trial license and any purchased (Classic or Premium) license.

To replace the Trial license in the software with your purchased license, just launch BYE and click on the padlock icon near the upper right corner of the main BYE window. Copy your purchased license key from My Purchases to the Windows Clipboard and paste it into the license key field on the validation dialog.

If all you see in My Purchases is a Trial License key and you did not get a charge on your credit card then it would seem that you have not yet purchased a permanent license key. If your credit card was charged for a purchase but you do not see a purchased license key in My Purchases, then you may need to contact Guylain privately. IMPORTANT: Do not post your license key on this forum!!! Another option if you don't see your purchased key is that you used a different account on the web site when you purchased the key. In this case you would need to log on with the same username that you used to make the purchase in order to see and copy the license key. The Identifier field is your case-sensitive username for the account that is listing the license key.

This has been asked and answered many times before here on the forum.

Just click the padlock in the BYE upper right corner and enter your purchase key... or wait for the trial to expire and it will ask you for your purchase key then.

I just bought an upgrade from version 3.0 to 3.17, but all I could get was the trial version after the purchase. I'm not sure if I have to remove the trial version in order to get the premium version, even if my license is still active. I would appreciate clarification.

You didn't upgrade from 3.0 to 3.17. All upgrades have been free for the past 15 years, and there is no purchase key under your sarika87 account.

Your post is confusing. There is no version of BYE that is numbered 3.17. There was a version number 3.1.17, but per the developers that version will not work with a Trial license because it is almost 5 years old. To apply a Trial license you must be on the latest release, which is 3.2.3, or a newer pre-release which is 3.5.0.RC5.

The 3.0.x licenses are multi-line alphanumeric strings that were sent to your email address and you had to maintain them and keep them safe. Starting with BYE 3.1, a new licensing scheme was implemented by O'Telescope. For the new scheme, which is still in effect today, O'Telescope maintains your license keys and makes them available to you via the My Purchases -> Orders menu whenever you log in to this web site with the same email address that you used when you purchased your 3.1 license from the O'Telescope Store. To upgrade from 3.0 to a 3.1x or 3.2.x version you need to exchange your multi-line license for a new single-line license. The Upgrade link at the bottom of this page describes the upgrade process.

There is no cost unless you are upgrading to a more-featured edition of BYE. However, you should upgrade to either version 3.2.3 or the 3.5.0.RC5 pre-release version. This will give you all the latest enhancements, fixes, and support for many more cameras. Since there is a no cost to upgrade path from a 3.0 license to a 3.1 license which still works for all later releases, installing the latest release of the software is a no-brainer.

I hope this helps.

"After updating to the latest version, stuck on the trial license. frustrating experience that prevents the features from being fully explored. I'm hoping for a quick fix so I can take full advantage of the improved version's capabilities.

Well, no, this not possible because the trial is the full PREMIUM version, 100% of all features are in the trial, so you have 100% all the features to explore.

Click the padlock icon in BYE enter your premium key there.

If the Trial license has not expired, then the software you have is 100% equivalent to a Premium license with all the features available to explore.

To convert the Trial license to a Premium license you only have to purchase a Premium license for BYE from the O'Telescope Store and transfer your new license from the My Purchases -> Orders menu on this web site into the BYE license validation dialog. There is no need to download another copy of the software.
